13 Assassins (Japanese: 十三人の刺客, Hepburn: Jūsannin no Shikaku) is a 2010 samurai film directed by Takashi Miike, featuring Koji Yakusho, Takayuki Yamada, Sōsuke Takaoka, Hiroki Matsukata, Kazuki Namioka, and Gorō Inagaki. It is a remake of Eiichi Kudo’s 1963 period drama of the same name and is set in 1844, toward the end of the Edo period. The story follows a group of thirteen assassins—twelve samurai and a hunter—who secretly plan to assassinate Lord Matsudaira Naritsugu, the ruthless leader of the Akashi clan, to prevent his rise to the Shogunate Council.

This film marks the third collaboration between Yamada and Takaoka, following Crows Zero and Crows Zero 2, also directed by Miike. Filming took place in Tsuruoka, Yamagata, from July to September 2009. 13 Assassins premiered in Japan on 25 September 2010 and in the United States on 29 April 2011, earning widespread praise, with many western critics drawing comparisons to the works of Akira Kurosawa.

In 1844, during the waning days of the Edo Period, the Tokugawa Shogunate is in decline. Lord Matsudaira Naritsugu of Akashi, a brutal and sadistic noble, commits horrific acts of rape, torture, and murder against both nobles and commoners. Protected by his half-brother, the Shōgun, Naritsugu is immune to justice. As he is set to ascend to the Shogunate Council, Sir Doi Toshitsura, the Justice Minister, foresees that Naritsugu’s rise will plunge the country into civil war due to the many feudal lords he has wronged. One such lord, from the Mamiya clan, commits seppuku in protest after Naritsugu slaughters his entire family. Despite these warnings, the Shōgun remains adamant about Naritsugu’s promotion.

Desperate to stop him, Sir Doi hires veteran samurai Shimada Shinzaemon to assassinate Naritsugu. However, Naritsugu’s loyal retainer, Hanbei, an old rival of Shinzaemon, uncovers the plot through spies. Determined, Shinzaemon recruits ten more samurai, including his nephew, Shinrokurō, and one rōnin, to ambush Naritsugu on his journey from Edo to Akashi. Before Naritsugu departs, Hanbei confronts Shinzaemon, aware of the assassination plan. Despite the risk, the assassins decide to ambush Naritsugu in the town of Ochiai, believing he will pass through there during his pre-announced visit to Naegi. Along their journey, the assassins are attacked by rōnin hired by Hanbei. Concerned about further ambushes, they leave the main roads and take to the mountains, only to lose their way. They then rescue a hunter named Kiga Koyata, who guides them to Ochiai and volunteers to join their cause as the thirteenth assassin.
