Anjaam Pathira (translation: The Fifth Midnight) (advertised outside Kerala and internationally as Midnight Murder) is a 2020 Indian Malayalam-language crime thriller film written and directed by Midhun Manuel Thomas. The film stars Kunchacko Boban, Sharaf U Deen, Sreenath Bhasi, Unnimaya Prasad, Jinu Joseph and Abhiram Radhakrishnan. Sushin Shyam composed music and Shaju Khalid handled the camera.
Anjaam Pathira was dubbed in Telugu and Hindi as Midnight Murder and Police Story, and released by Aha Telefilms and Goldmines Telefilms. The film received positive reviews and became the highest-grossing Malayalam film of 2020. It was remade in Bengali as “Mukhosh” in 2021. Following the success of the film, Midhun Manuel Thomas announced a sequel titled Aaaram Pathiraa (translation: The Sixth Midnight.
The plot is partially based on real events: the character “Psycho Simon” is taken from the 2017 Nanthancode massacre, in which a psychopathic son murdered his entire family, and the character “Ripper Ravi” is based on Ripper Chandran, a notorious serial killer from Kerala in the late 1980s.

Plot Anwar Hussain is a psychologist working as a consulting criminologist with the Kochi City Police on the special recommendation of his friend ACP Anil Madhavan. One night, DYSP Abraham Koshy is kidnapped and his body is left in a gypsum field with his eyes and heart cut out. The investigation is led by DCP Catherine. The post-mortem report indicates the presence of Zolpidem in his system but no signs of duress were found. A few days later, a second police officer goes missing and is found in the backyard of the police station along with the body of a Lady Justice. In the forensic photos, Anwar finds similar remains from the previous crime scene.
The autopsy results are the same as before. The department’s security footage has been doctored, suggesting that the culprit is also a security hacker. Anwar hires hacker Andrew to conduct a cyber investigation. Catherine executes a plan to lure out the culprit, which involves two police officers pairing up and patrolling 100 meters apart. Katherine’s driver, Paulson, is kidnapped while on duty. On his scooter camera footage, the voices of a man wearing a wolf mask and another man can be heard, suggesting they are working together as a team. Paulson’s body is placed in a refrigerated box and taken to Anwar’s house.
Anjaam Pathiraa Movie Review
This movie is worth watching. It is great to see how the director has based this movie on psychological thriller series and movies. The scene where Kunchacko Boban’s character meets Indran’s Ripper character reminded me of Holden Ford’s meeting with student murderer Edward Kemper in David Fincher’s TV series Mindhunter. All the actors in this movie played their parts well except Jinu Joseph who should work on his line delivery (his role as ACP was not very convincing).
