Asuran Movie Tamilyogi

Asuran (transl. Demon) is a 2019 Indian Tamil-language period action drama film directed by Vetrimaaran and produced by Kalaipuli S. Thanu. It is inspired by the novel Vekkai (transl. Heat) by Poomani. The film stars Dhanush, alongside Manju Warrier in her Tamil debut, Ken Karunas, and Teejay Arunasalam. The music for the film was composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar, with cinematography by Velraj and editing by R. Ramar.

Asuran was released in theaters on October 4, 2019, and achieved commercial success at the box office. The film received two awards at the 67th National Film Awards, winning Best Feature Film in Tamil and Best Actor for Dhanush. It was also one of ten Indian films showcased at the 78th Golden Globe Awards (2021) in the Best Foreign Film category. Additionally, it was screened at the 51st International Film Festival of India as part of the Indian Panorama section. The film was later remade in Telugu as Narappa (2021).

Following the release of Velaiilla Pattadhari 2 (2017), producer Kalaipuli S. Thanu entered into a three-film deal with Dhanush. After the success of Vada Chennai (2018), director Vetrimaaran expressed intentions to create a sequel, with Dhanush set to reprise his role. However, both Vetrimaaran and Dhanush agreed to work on another project for Thanu before moving forward with the sequel.

On December 21, 2018, Dhanush announced the title of the new film along with a poster. Filming was scheduled to commence in January 2019. G. V. Prakash Kumar was brought on board to compose the music, marking a reunion with the director and actor after their collaborations on Polladhavan (2007) and Aadukalam (2011). The film is set against a backdrop spanning the 1960s to the 1980s, with Dhanush portraying a character in his mid-40s.

Principal photography for Asuran commenced on January 26, 2019, with the initial shooting schedule taking place in Tirunelveli. Reports indicated that Dhanush would portray a dual role as both father and son in the film. Initially, he was also slated to play a dual role in another film directed by R. S. Durai Senthilkumar, titled Pattas (2020).

While filming for Asuran was underway, Dhanush began shooting for Pattas, taking a brief break before resuming work on Asuran in April 2019. The final shooting schedule for Asuran began in May 2019, with plans to complete filming by June 2019.

Asuran Movie Story

The narrator introduces Sivasaami, a farmer, and his son Chidambaram. Sivasaami’s family consists of his wife, Pachaiyamma, her brother Murugesan, and her daughter Lakshmi, along with their older son, Velmurugan. They all live in Thekkoor, a village predominantly inhabited by Dalits. While Sivasaami shares a close bond with Velmurugan, he has a strained and often abusive relationship with Chidambaram.

Narasimhan, an upper-caste landlord from Vadakoor, seeks to acquire Sivasaami’s three acres of land to build a factory. However, the family, particularly Velmurugan, vehemently opposes selling it. The tension escalates when Narasimhan’s son assaults Pachaiyamma. In retaliation, Velmurugan severely injures Narasimhan’s son and his men, leading to his imprisonment.

Desperate to free Velmurugan, Sivasaami appeals to Narasimhan for help. In response, Narasimhan humiliates him by demanding he prostrate himself before every male villager in Narasimhan’s community as a form of atonement. Upon learning of his father’s degradation, Velmurugan confronts Narasimhan and strikes him with a slipper. In a brutal act of revenge, Narasimhan’s henchmen, led by a hunter named Kariyan, behead Velmurugan and dispose of his headless body in their field.
