De De Pyaar De is a 2019 Hindi-language romantic comedy directed by Akiv Ali in his debut and written by Luv Ranjan. Produced by T-Series Films and Luv Films, the film stars Ajay Devgn, Tabu, and Rakul Preet Singh. The story revolves around the complications that arise when a middle-aged NRI, on the verge of divorce, falls for a much younger woman and introduces her to his family—sparking chaos with his ex-wife and children.
Pre-production started in February 2017, with filming beginning on 19 January 2018 in Mumbai, later moving to London and Kullu Manali. The film wrapped production in August 2018 and released on 17 May 2019. It became a financial success, grossing ₹143 crore (US$17 million) worldwide.
A sequel is set to begin production in June 2024, with a planned release on 1 May 2025. Ajay Devgn, R. Madhavan, and Rakul Preet Singh will be returning for the sequel.
In February 2017, Luv Ranjan confirmed that Ajay Devgn had signed on to star in an untitled “urban comedy” that he would write, with production handled by Ranjan and Ankur Garg. The film, described as a “contemporary rom-com,” marked the directorial debut of Akiv Ali, who had previously worked as a film editor on Ranjan’s projects. Devgn, playing a 50-year-old character for the first time, attributed this role to the increasing availability of “meatier roles” for actors his age, and felt the audience was ready to embrace such characters. He also noted that the film’s premise focused on strong female characters and delivered a positive message.
In May 2017, it was confirmed that Tabu would star as one of the female leads opposite Devgn, marking her seventh collaboration with the actor. Their most recent project together at the time had been Golmaal Again (2017). Tabu remarked that the film highlighted the differences in how a mid-40s couple handles their relationship compared to a 27-year-old woman, with different insecurities and issues.
In late April 2018, it was announced that Jimmy Sheirgill would join the cast in a supporting role as the love interest of Tabu’s character. This marked his second collaboration with Tabu, the first being his debut film Maachis in 1996.

De De Pyaar De Movie Story
Ashish Mehra, a 50-year-old NRI investor living in London, begins a relationship with Ayesha, a 26-year-old independent woman. Despite their age gap, the two grow close and start living together. Ashish reveals to Ayesha that he is separated from his wife, Manju Rao, who lives in India with their children, Ishika and Ishaan. After some discussion about their age difference, Ashish decides to introduce Ayesha to his family, and they travel to his home in Manali. There, they find that Manju and their children are now staying with Ashish’s parents. Ishika, Ashish’s daughter, is particularly displeased with his arrival, fearing he’ll disrupt an important meeting between her boyfriend Rishi and his father, Atul Saxena.
Caught off guard, Ashish lies and introduces Ayesha as his secretary, which frustrates Ayesha. Meanwhile, tensions rise between Ayesha and Manju due to their unresolved feelings for Ashish. In a series of misunderstandings, Ashish is presented as Manju’s brother to Rishi and Atul. Ayesha and Manju clash further, and the situation escalates when Ishika discovers the truth. She angrily confronts Ashish for deceiving the family. Ashish confesses that he brought Ayesha to seek his family’s approval for their relationship. Atul, seeing the family dynamics unravel, calls off the wedding, deeming the family unreliable.
De De Pyaar De Movie Review
The film starts off slow but steadily gains momentum, turning into a wholesome, fun-filled entertainer. The casting is spot-on—Tabu is at her best, delivering another stellar performance. Ajay Devgn fits perfectly into his role, playing a mature, age-appropriate character, which brought to mind shades of Anant—more seasoned and grounded. Rakul Preet Singh, though initially serving as eye candy, gradually proves her potential. Sharing screen space with seasoned actors like Tabu and Devgn is no easy task, but she holds her own, delivering a strong performance in the latter half.
This movie is a refreshing take on a coming-of-age comedy, tackling modern-day issues and social stigmas in a very mature way. It never feels preachy, but it subtly imparts wisdom through well-placed anecdotes.
While some dialogues feel a bit reminiscent of the over-the-top, filmi style of the 70s—cliched at times—they still work in the context of the film.
There are definitely a few standout scenes that will stay with you. Without giving away any spoilers, this movie is definitely worth a watch for its light, refreshing entertainment!
