Gehraiyaan is a 2022 Indian Hindi-language romantic drama film directed by Shakun Batra and produced by Dharma Productions, Viacom18 Studios, and Joska Films. The lead roles are played by Deepika Padukone and Siddhant Chaturvedi, with Ananya Panday, Darya Karwa, Rajat Kapoor, and Naseeruddin Shah in supporting roles.

Gehraiyaan premiered on Amazon Prime Video on February 11, 2022.The film received mixed reviews from critics, who praised the soundtrack, cinematography, visual style, and acting of the cast. However, the story, screenplay, and climax were criticized.

In April 2019, it was reported that Shakun Batra would direct an Osho biopic, but it was postponed. At the 21st MAMI Film Festival in October 2019, it was reported that director Batra would be directing Deepika Padukone in the lead role, and described the film’s genre as domestic noir. In December 2019, Padukone went to the Dharma Productions offices to meet Batra, where a few minutes of script discussion took place.Impressed by the story, Padukone confirmed that she would star in the film. In mid-December 2019, it was also reported that Vicky Kaushal and Siddhant Chaturvedi would play the male leads, with another actress also joining the project.The latter was set, and Ananya Panday was cast as the second female lead in the same month. Dariya Karwa was cast as Padukone’s love interest in March 2020.

Alisha “Al” Khanna, a 30-year-old yoga teacher, is working on developing an app but struggles to find investors while caring for her boyfriend Karan Arora, an unemployed writer. She also suffers from anxiety and has had to deal with the suicide of her mother Sonali at a young age and is estranged from her father Vinod. Alisha’s cousin Tia “Thi” is engaged to Zain Oberoi and invites the couple to her beach house in Alibaug. Zain and Alisha become close due to their traumatic past and flirt with each other. Alisha then kisses him and regrets it afterwards, but feels hurt when she finds out that Karan has allowed Tia to read his manuscript and as she had been asking him to read it for a long time. She brings Zayn back home and they begin an affair.

Zayn invests his business in Alisha’s app. He reveals to her that his father was violent towards him and his mother and that is what made him emigrate to America. Karan then proposes to Alisha in front of all their family and friends including Tia and Zayn and Alisha accepts his proposal.

Gehraiyaan Movie Review

Acting Deepika stole every scene she was in. She fits perfectly into the skin of any character but when you have a character as strong as her you should use her instead of keeping her as a second to the hero. Ananya Panday does a good job with her role and makes her innocent privileged girl believable but I think you could trust her in some of the stronger scenes. Siddharth plays his role perfectly and his acting is sharp and on point but he could have tried a bit harder in the key scenes. Dhariya’s acting was again limited but he did justice to his character. Nasiruddin and Rajat Kapoor were irreplaceable gems and were very good but I think the casting would have been interesting if they had swapped the characters as we have seen them in the same roles for so long.

Kaushal Shah is a rising star in the background scenes of the film and deserves recognition for the beautiful color palette of each scene and the ripples that show the turmoil and confusion in the characters’ lives.
