Immaculate is a 2024 American horror film directed by Michael Mohan and written by Andrew Lobel. It stars Sydney Sweeney (who also serves as producer), Alvaro Morte, Benedetta Porcaroli, Dora Romano, Giorgio Colangeli, and Simona Tabasco. The story revolves around a young nun who is invited to live in a picturesque Italian convent, but gradually becomes aware of the horrifying secrets it holds.
Immaculate premiered at South by Southwest on March 12, 2024, and was released in US theaters by Neon on March 22, 2024. The film received mixed reviews and grossed $28.4 million worldwide. Development of Immaculate began in 2014, when Sydney Sweeney first auditioned for a role in the film, which was written by Andrew Lobel. However, the project fell into development hell without going into production.After her breakthrough role in the TV series Euphoria, Sweeney bought the rights to the script and approached frequent co-star Michael Mohan to direct.Mohan has said that many scenes in the film were inspired by his Catholic upbringing.
In October 2022, it was announced that Sweeney would join the cast of the film, with Mohan directing and Sweeney serving as a producer under his Fifty Fifty Films banner.Mohan said the script originally called for a cast of high school girls rather than nuns, but that was changed to suit Sweeney’s and the audience’s expectations.
In February 2023, Alvaro Morte, Benedetta Porcaroli, Dora Romano, Giorgio Colangeli and Simona Tabasco joined the film’s cast.
In December 2023, Neon acquired the film’s US distribution rights.It had its world premiere at South by Southwest on March 12, 2024. It was released theatrically on March 22, 2024. The film also screened at the Fargo Film Festival on March 22, 2024.

Sister Mary sneaks into her superior’s bedroom at night, steals a set of keys, and escapes through the locked gates of a Catholic convent. Four hooded figures capture her, breaking her legs and rendering her unconscious. Mary subsequently awakens in a coffin, having been buried alive.

Cecilia takes perpetual vows to follow the evangelical exhortations, becomes a nun and receives the rosary.
Immaculate Movie Review
Sydney did an absolute amazing job basically creating this movie all on her own! She auditioned for the original plot at age 16 but the film was never produced, so she bought the rights herself and made it. Much of the cinematography is similar to scenes in The Handmaids Tale which leaves for some really good and eery shots. I think Sydney’s involvement in the film is a huge reason why it’s such a big hit! Her on and behind the camera skills made the plot much better than the original!
