The plot of the film is based on the life and struggle of Lal Bihari, a farmer from the small village of Amilo Mubarakpur, who was declared dead in official documents. It was Kaushik’s last directorial project before his death on March 9, 2023.
At the Filmfare OTT Awards 2021, Kaagaz was nominated in three categories: Best Web Original Movie, Best Actor in a Web Original Movie (Tripathi), and Best Supporting Actor in a Web Original Movie (Kaushik). A spiritual sequel, Kaagaz 2, was released on March 1, 2024, to positive reviews.
The film depicts the struggle and aspirations of Bharat Lal Bihari against the Indian bureaucracy, even though he is declared dead in government records. His fight against the government lasted for 19 years.
On review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an average rating of 5/10 with 29% positive out of 7 reviews.
Pallavi Dey Purkayastha of The Times of India rated the film 3/5 and wrote, “In conclusion, Kaagaz may have been the perfect film for those looking for a jolt of inspiration, but ultimately, the film is a one-dimensional masterpiece. One man’s acting prowess.” Not that I’m complaining, this movie had the potential to tug at people’s heartstrings. Unfortunately, it didn’t.

Kaagaz Movie Review
“Kaagaz” is a very beautifully made film about how an ordinary man tries to prove his survival on paper despite being declared dead. How a middle-class man tries to get his identity back on paper.
The world is beautiful and there is a countdown to go. But when humans were born, their only identity was their ancestors. But in today’s world, to survive, they need to provide solid proof on paper with a government stamp. Only the government has authority over the human world. If you happen to be alive, you are given proof of your existence. And the same goes for death.
Kaagaz is based on real events and while this is not the only example, millions are not taken into consideration. Pankaj Tripathi delivers the best performance and his journey along with the dialogues are portrayed so well that it touches you to the core.
The cinematography is kept simple and no unusual angles are used. Though Satish Kaushik only played a small role, this was his best directorial work. Some of his dialogues in the film are moving.
This film is based on the real life of Lal Bihari and only he knows the difficulties he must have gone through. I understand that and I’m sure the makers got to know him and seriously studied his background and experiences. I think Satish Kaushik has shown two main things: Pankaj Tripathi is trying to prove himself, but on the other hand, it has a political agenda.
Even today, family conflicts are rife in remote villages. It’s about ownership, politics and all the insiders that affect people’s lives.
