Kadugu (Mustard) is a 2017 Indian Tamil-language drama film written, produced, and directed by Vijay Milton. Featuring a diverse ensemble cast including Bharath, Rajakumaran, Radhika Prasidhha, Subiksha, Bharath Seeni, and A. Venkatesh, the film explores themes of personal growth and societal challenges.
Distributed by actor Suriya, Kadugu was released theatrically on March 24, 2017, and received positive reviews from critics for its storytelling and performances. The director later adapted the film’s core plot for his Kannada directorial debut, Bairagee (2022).In May 2014, Vijay Milton expressed his desire to direct T. Rajender in a film about a character’s journey from “zero” to “hero.” However, after becoming busy with 10 Endrathukulla (2015) and failing to convince Rajender to participate, Milton pivoted to cast Rajakumaran as the lead, portraying a puli vesham artist. Bharath joined the project in early 2016, physically transforming himself into a boxer with the help of trainer Sivakumar. He took a pay cut to accommodate the film’s budget and clarified that he was not playing the antagonist, but one of the three lead roles.
Bharath’s brother, Bharath Seeni, was also cast in a significant role, alongside actresses Subiksha and Radhika Prasidhha. Initially, Srushti Dange was considered for a role before Subiksha was finalized, and Samantha distanced herself from the film after earlier reports suggested she would star opposite Rajakumaran. Production began in March 2016 in Chennai, with the climax shot in the outskirts of the city in May 2016.
