“Licorice Pizza” is a 2021 American romantic comedy-drama film written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. It marks the film debuts of Alana Haim and Cooper Hoffman, who are joined by an ensemble cast that includes Sean Penn, Tom Waits, Bradley Cooper, and Benny Safdie. Set in 1973, the story explores the relationship between a teenage actor (Hoffman) and a young woman (Haim) who feels directionless in life.
The film had a limited release in the United States on November 26, 2021, followed by a wider release on December 25. Despite being a box-office disappointment, grossing $33 million worldwide against a $40 million production budget, it received critical acclaim. “Licorice Pizza” garnered three nominations at the 94th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay—marking Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s first fully produced, marketed, and distributed film to be nominated for Best Picture since “Rain Man” in 1988.
In addition to its Oscar nominations, the film received three awards from the National Board of Review, including Best Film, was named one of the best films of 2021 by the American Film Institute, earned four nominations at the 79th Golden Globe Awards (including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy), and won the BAFTA Award for Best Original Screenplay. Around 2001, Paul Thomas Anderson was passing by a middle school in Los Angeles during picture day when he witnessed a student nagging the female photographer. This sparked the idea for a romantic relationship between a student and a photographer, which eventually evolved into the screenplay for “Licorice Pizza.” Anderson also drew inspiration from stories shared by his friend Gary Goetzman, a former child actor known for his role in “Yours, Mine and Ours” alongside Lucille Ball. Goetzman later ventured into business, starting a waterbed company and a pinball arcade, and once delivered a waterbed to Jon Peters’s home.
Anderson cited “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” and “American Graffiti” as significant influences on “Licorice Pizza.” He obtained permission from Jon Peters to create a character based on him, with the condition that Peters’s favorite pick-up line be included. This led Anderson to develop a “monster version” of Peters, inspired by the 1970s Hollywood producers known for their bravado and aggressive energy.

Gary finds waterbeds in a wig shop and starts selling them, then reunites with Alana at a teen fair. At the fair, Gary is mistaken for a murder suspect and arrested on the spot. Alana follows him to the police station. Once the mix-up is resolved, he is released immediately. She joins his waterbed business, acting seductively on the phone to attract potential customers.
When Gary introduces Alana to a talent agent, he is upset that she is open to nudity but won’t show him her breasts. She impulsively does so, but slaps him when he asks to touch her. They open a waterbed store called “Fat Bernie’s”, but Alana is hurt when Gary flirts with a classmate, Sue, and then later flirts with Sue in the back room.
Licorice Pizza Movie Review
Highly innovative and loaded with references to the canon of films that have touched us before, it is a true masterpiece that will resonate for decades to come. It is honest and true, yet has a crazy pace, and a mischievous wink that makes it a charming and almost good-natured con man. I couldn’t help but laugh watching Gary’s antics, scheming and constant hustle, wrapped in innocence, confidence and aloof warmth. Sugar and salt are always a great flavor combination for the cook who can make the right mixture. This director has done it… and the result is a genius piece of cinema rarely seen. Like any great work of art, this film is filled with subtlety and beauty as well as tremendous energy, moments of suspense and hilarious humor.
