Magalir Mattum (English: Ladies Only) is a 2017 Indian Tamil comedy-drama film written and directed by Bramma, marking his second project after Kuttram Kadithal (2015). The film features a talented cast, including Jyothika, Urvashi, Bhanupriya, and Saranya Ponvannan, alongside supporting actors like Nassar, Livingston, Gokulnath, and G. Marimuthu.
The story centers on three female school friends who reunite after 38 years, navigating the challenges posed by the men in their lives. Produced by Suriya and featuring a score by Ghibran, the film began production in July 2016 and was released theatrically on September 15, 2017. Magalir Mattum received positive reviews, with Jyothika earning a nomination for Best Actress and Urvashi and Bhanupriya nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the South Filmfare Awards. After the success of Kuttram Kadithal (2015), Bramma was approached by Suriya’s production company, 2D Entertainment, to create a film for them. He pitched three scripts, including a female-centric story that Jyothika was set to star in, which Suriya agreed to finance. To prepare for her role, Jyothika participated in a series of workshops for twenty days, during which she worked on losing weight and learning to ride a motorbike. She received guidance from Suriya and professional biker Sheeba through lessons in Uttar Pradesh.
Meanwhile, Bramma finalized the script, completing the process within two months. The film was officially launched in July 2016, with Saranya Ponvannan, Bhanupriya, Urvashi, Nassar, and Livingston joining the cast. By August 2016, the film was reported to be “thirty percent” complete after filming a schedule in Tindivanam. Initially, it was suggested that Suriya might make a guest appearance, but he later asked his friend Madhavan to take on the role instead.

Magalir Mattum l Movie Story
Prabhavathi, known as Prabha, is a spirited and independent woman who creates documentaries. Initially living with her two filmmaking friends, she later moves in with her future mother-in-law, Gomatha Silkurayappan, affectionately called Goms, after her son leaves for a job overseas. Goms, a retired teacher, now tutors local children at home.
Prabha discovers that Goms misses her school friends, Subbulakshmi Mangalamoorthy (Subbu) and Rani Amirthakumari Gothandaraman, with whom she lost touch nearly 40 years ago. Through flashbacks, it’s revealed that the three girls were expelled from their Catholic hostel after a failed attempt to sneak out to see a movie, leaving Goms behind as she was a local. Determined to reunite Goms with her friends, Prabha utilizes Facebook to locate Rani, who she finds living in Agra with a complicated family situation, including a misogynistic husband and politically obsessed son. Although Rani’s life is tumultuous, Prabha decides to take Goms to Agra to facilitate their reunion. Meanwhile, Subbu lives in Hyderabad with her alcoholic husband and bedridden mother-in-law, harboring dreams of becoming a beautician that her family life has hindered.
