Merry Christmas is a 2024 Indian bilingual mystery thriller film directed by Sriram Raghavan and produced by Tips Films and Matchbox Pictures. The film stars Vijay Sethupathi and Katrina Kaif in the lead roles, alongside Ashwini Kalsekar, Luke Kenny, Pari Maheshwari Sharma, and features cameo appearances by Radhika Apte, Gayathri, and Sahil Vaid. The basic plot of the film is based on Frédéric Dahl’s French novel Le Monte-charge (The Cagged Bird).
The film was officially announced in December 2021. Principal photography began in Mumbai the same month, with sporadic shooting schedules in Uttar Pradesh followed by shoot schedules at previous locations, and was completed in mid-January 2023. The film’s music has been composed by Pritam, cinematography by Madhu Neelakandan and editing by Pooja Radha Surti. After several postponements, Merry Christmas is set to hit theaters on January 12, 2024. The film received positive reviews, with Kaif and Sethupathi’s performances praised. Despite this, the film was a box office failure.
In January 2021, it was reported that director Sriram Raghavan had postponed his directorial project, Ex, starring Varun Dhawan, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and embarked on a new project starring Hindi actress Katrina Kaif and Saif. Ali Khan was offered the lead role. Khan approved the script, but the film required a new cast, so Tamil actor Vijay Sethupathi was cast instead. The film was reportedly scheduled for release in April, but the release was postponed due to the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic and Kaif’s positive COVID-19 test. The film was officially announced on December 25 by producers Ramesh Taurani and Sanjay Routray. The title “Merry Christmas” was suggested by Dinesh Vijan when the director was considering titles containing the word raat such as Raat Akeli Hai, Raat Ke Humsafar and Baat Ek Raat Ki.

Merry Christmas Movie Story
In 1980s Bombay, Albert Arogyasamy returns home on Christmas Eve after seven years away. As he mourns the death of his mother, a neighbour consoles him and gives him a bottle of wine he made himself. Later, the neighbour invites Albert to dinner, but Albert politely declines, saying he wants to go out. He goes to a restaurant where he spots a man who appears to be running away from a date. He then encounters the man’s date, Maria, and her mute daughter, Annie. Albert follows Maria and Annie to the cinema. They talk for a while, and Maria invites Albert to celebrate Christmas with her. Sharing stories of loss and hardship brings them closer together.
Returning to Maria’s apartment, she finds her husband Jerome dead on the couch with a gun in his hand. Fearing suspicion, Albert, who has just been released from prison for the murder of a woman named Rosie, tries to elude the police. As the night progresses, Albert realizes that Maria has staged the event in a replica of her apartment, fabricating an elaborate alibi. She later confesses that she killed Jerome due to his abusive behavior and the fact that he may have abused Annie.
