Panga is a 2020 Indian Hindi-language sports drama film written and directed by Ashwini Iyer Tiwari from a screenplay by Nitesh Tiwari. Produced and distributed by Fox Star Studios, the film stars Kangana Ranaut in the lead role, with Jassi Gill, Yagya Bhasin, Neena Gupta and Richa Chadha in key roles.
The film was primarily shot in Panaji, Bhopal, Mumbai and Kolkata and was released in India on January 24, 2020.
The film and Ranaut’s performance received widespread critical acclaim. Several publications, including Paste, Cosmopolitan and Times of India, listed Panga as one of the best films of 2020. Marie Claire called it one of the best Bollywood films of all time. During its theatrical release, Panga grossed Rs 41.71 crore worldwide, making it the 10th highest-grossing film of the year. For her performance in Panga, Ranaut won the Best Actress award at the 67th National Film Awards. Panga was announced on 21 August 2018, with Ashwini Iyer Tiwari sharing an emotional video montage on Instagram of herself, Kangana Ranaut, Jassi Gill, Neena Gupta and their families, saying, “If your relatives are cheering for you, no one in the world can do that while filming Panga. In an interview with Mumbai Mirror, Ranaut said, “I was totally moved when Ashwini narrated the story of the film. My family has been a strong support to me and has always been there for me through good and bad times. I really related to the emotions in this film. Ashwini is also known for her real-life corner and I loved her recent film Bareilly Ki Barfi. Panga is even more special to me as I will be playing the role of a kabaddi player at the national level for the first time. This will definitely be a challenge! I am looking forward to an exciting time with Ashwini and the Fox Star team. ”
Gill, who plays the role of Ranaut’s husband in the film, told Mumbai Mirror, “I loved the script, especially the touching family aspect. The film is a rollercoaster of emotions but for me the most heartwarming part was the theme of real Indian family emotions. “I come from a very close-knit family, so I could relate to this story.”

Adi learns of her success through Prashant and encourages her to return to the sport despite facing physical issues and an experienced rookie player. Her friend and former teammate, kabaddi coach Meenal “Meenu” Singh, helps her train. Initially, she is unable to cope with the pressures of a hectic job and the training routine fuelled by Adi’s enthusiasm, but eventually she regains her composure and, with the support of Prashant and Adi, returns to the sports world as a mother to a seven-year-old child. Her story is once again attracting attention.
Panga Movie Review
Panga is a well-constructed film. This is not your average film about women empowerment. Rather, it is the conflict between a mother’s belief in her duty and her long-forgotten dreams. However, before the comeback indicated in the trailer, there are some sweet moments of family fun. Then we see the meandering movement towards the aforementioned return. But there are still many obstacles to overcome. Ashwini Iyer takes her time to explain to us how the character overcomes all these obstacles. Kangana, as the protagonist “Jaya Nigam”, displays the same behaviour till the end. The director emphasises this as if to say that you don’t have to completely change yourself to achieve your goals, but a little change in your mindset is enough. It also shows the value of strong family ties that form the basis of collective happiness.
