Pippa is a 2023 Indian Hindi-language biographical war film based on the life of Captain Balram Singh Mehta of the Indian 45th Cavalry Regiment, who fought on the Eastern Front alongside his brothers during the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War. The film is named after the Russian amphibious tank PT-76, which floats on the water like an empty “pippa” (can) of clarified butter. It follows Mehta’s coming of age as he must prove himself in the Bangladesh War.
The film is based on the true events of the 1971 Battle of Garibpur and is directed by Raja Krishna Menon. The film is produced by RSVP Movies and Roy Kapur Films and produced by Ronnie Screwvala and Siddharth Roy Kapur. The lead roles are played by Ishaan Khattar, Mrunal Thakur and Priyanshu Panuri. The film is an adaptation of Brigadier General Balram Singh Mehta’s war memoir, The Burning Chaffees.The film premiered on Amazon Prime Video on November 10, 2023.

Background: On March 25, 1971, Pakistani soldiers entered Dhaka University and indiscriminately shot dead students and staff. This massacre became known as the 1971 Dhaka University Massacre. Pakistani President Yahya Khan launched Operation Searchlight to crush the Bengali nationalist movement. Thousands were killed by Pakistani forces and thousands of Bengali women were taken as sex slaves. Millions fled across the border to India and sought refuge there.
Captain Balram Singh Mehta is a young officer in the 45th Cavalry Regiment, equipped with a PT-76 tank, nicknamed “Pippa”. He has problems with discipline and often gets into trouble with his superiors. His elder brother is Major Ram Mehta, who tries to instill discipline in his younger brother. Radha Mehta is her younger sister and the three live in Delhi with their mother Murthy.

The film also shows how common people can play a vital role in protecting humanity when wars and mass killings are happening all around us.Though the story was vivid and fast paced, I think the engineers and cameramen did not do a good job as I noticed the camera angles changed a lot during the tank diving test in the river and during the modification of the tank by Bali at the Army garage during the scene at the Delhi HQ and also during the scene with the women refugees on their way to the boiler when Bali returns to duty.
