Poor Things is a 2023 film directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and written by Tony McNamara. Based on Alasdair Gray’s 1992 novel, the film is an Irish-British-American co-production and stars Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe, Ramy Youssef, Christopher Abbott, and Jerrod Carmichael. Stone plays Bella Baxter, a young woman brought back to life by a brain transplant in Victorian London.
Principal photography took place in Hungary from August to December 2021. Poor Things premiered at the 80th Venice International Film Festival on September 1, 2023, where it won the Golden Lion. The film received critical acclaim and was theatrically released by Searchlight Pictures on December 8, 2023 in the United States and on January 12, 2024 in Ireland and the United Kingdom. Budgeted at $35 million, the film was a huge box office success, grossing $117 million worldwide.

In late Victorian London, medical student Max McCandles is hired by mad scientist Godwin Baxter to document the behavior of a strange, nearly mute woman living in Godwin’s house. Godwin discovers that Bella’s body is that of a woman who committed suicide by jumping off a bridge while pregnant. Godwin replaces the woman’s brain with that of a fetus, gives her a child’s mind, and names her Bella Baxter.
As the weeks pass, Bella’s vocabulary improves and she displays a childlike wonder at the world. With Godwin’s encouragement, Max falls in love with Bella and proposes marriage. Bella accepts, but soon becomes aware of her masturbatory and sexual desires, leading her to flee to Lisbon with dissolute lawyer Duncan Wedderburn. They have sex there almost constantly, as Bella lives only for pleasure. She is mistakenly referred to as “Victoria Blessington” by another hotel guest.
