Sam Bahadur is a 2023 Indian Hindi-language biographical war drama film based on the life of India’s first Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw.The film is directed by Meghna Gulzar, who co-wrote the screenplay with Bhavani Iyer and Shantanu Srivastava. The film is produced by Ronnie Screwvala under the banner RSVP Movies.Vicky Kaushal stars in the lead role, alongside Fatima Sana Shaikh, Sanya Malhotra, Neeraj Kabi, Edward Sonnenblick and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub.
The film was released in theatres on December 1, 2023 and grossed Rs 128.17 crore (US$15 million) worldwide. At the 69th Filmfare Awards, the film was nominated for eight awards, including Best Film Best Actor.
in 2017, Meghna Gulzar Kaushal narrated the story for a Sam Manekshaw biopic on the sets of Raazi, where she was scheduled to shoot her next film. Kaushal was impressed by the idea and decided to take on the role. She then worked extensively with Bhavani Iyer and Shantanu Srivastava over the years, writing extensively for them. She also met Sam Manekshaw’s family. The film is Gulzar and Kaushal’s second collaboration. The film was announced by RSVP Movies in 2021 to coincide with the 107th birth anniversary of the late Sam Manekshaw.
In December 2021, Shaikh and Malhotra joined the cast, marking their third collaboration after Dangal and Ludo.Kabi joined in September 2022 as Jawaharlal Nehru, marking his second collaboration with Gulzar after Talvar

In 1934, Cadet Sam Manekshaw was part of the first class of cadets to be trained at the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. His classmates included his younger rival Tikka Khan. After graduating from the academy this year, he was commissioned as a lieutenant in the 12th Frontier Regiment, Ferozepur. Soon after his commission, he met and later married Shilu Bodo. In 1942, during World War II, Manekshaw was promoted to lieutenant major and deployed with his regiment to the Burmese front. During the Battle of Sittang Bridge, he was wounded in battle but survived and was awarded the Military Cross for bravery. In 1947, during the partition of British India, Manekshaw was asked by his colleague Yahya Khan to join the Pakistan Army. He chose the Indian Army instead. After independence, discord arose between the two countries over the sovereignty of Kashmir.
