Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is a 2021 American superhero film based on Marvel Comics and features the character Shang-Chi. It is the 25th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. Destin Daniel Cretton directed the film, co-writing the screenplay with Dave Callaham and Andrew Lanham. Simu Liu co-stars with Awkwafina, Menger Chan, Fala Chen, Florian Munteanu, Benedict Wong, Yuen Wah, Michelle Yeoh, Ben Kingsley, and Tony Leung. In the film, Shang-Chi is forced to confront his past when his father Wen-Wu (Leung), leader of the terrorist organization Ten Rings, takes Shang-Chi and his sister Xia-Ling (Zhang) on a quest to find a mythical village. .

A thousand years ago, Xu Wenwu discovered the mystical Ten Rings that granted divine powers, including immortality. He founded the Organization of the Ten Rings, which has conquered kingdoms and overthrown governments throughout history. In 1996, Wenwu explores Ta Lo, a village supposedly inhabited by mythical creatures. He makes his way through an enchanted forest to the village entrance, but is stopped by guard Ying Li. The two soon fall in love, but the villagers of Ta Lo reject Wenwu, so Li decides to follow Wenwu. They marry and have two children, Shang-Chi and Xia-Ling. Wen Wu leaves the organization and locks away the Ten Rings.
When Shang-Chi is seven years old, Li is murdered by Wen Wu’s enemies, the Iron Gang. Wen Wu puts on the ring again, massacres the Iron Gang, and returns to leadership of the organization. He trains Shang-Chi in brutal martial arts, but not Xia Ling, instead teaching her in secret.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings Review
The movie is just over 2 hours long, but it never feels boring or rushed. If you (like me) haven’t read the comics about Shang-Chi, the movie delves deep into his character and past, as well as his father. It doesn’t feel fake or like it leaves anything unfinished.
I know Awkwafina tends to play the same joker/sister/best friend type in a lot of her movies, but her character definitely suits her very well.
