The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is a 2008 American romantic fantasy drama directed by David Fincher. The screenplay, written by Eric Roth and Robin Swicord, is loosely based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1922 short story. The film features Brad Pitt as a man who ages backward and Cate Blanchett as his lifelong love interest. It also stars Taraji P. Henson, Julia Ormond, Jason Flemyng, Elias Koteas, and Tilda Swinton.
Producer Ray Stark acquired the film rights to the short story in the mid-1980s with backing from Universal Pictures but faced challenges in getting the project off the ground. In the 1990s, he sold the rights to producers Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall. Eventually, the project moved to Paramount Pictures, but production only began after Fincher and Pitt signed on in 2005. Filming took place from November 2006 to September 2007, with Digital Domain handling the visual effects, especially for Pitt’s character’s transformation. Released in North America on December 25, 2008, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button received positive reviews, garnering acclaim for Fincher’s direction, Pitt’s performance, production design, and visual effects. The film was a box office success, earning $335.8 million worldwide against a budget of $167 million. At the 81st Academy Awards, it received 13 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director for Fincher, and Best Actor for Pitt, ultimately winning three Oscars for Best Art Direction, Best Makeup, and Best Visual Effects.
