The Fall of the House of Usher is an American gothic horror drama miniseries directed by Mike Flanagan. The eight-episode series was released on Netflix on October 12, 2023. It was directed by either Flanagan or Michael Fimognari, the latter of whom also served as the director of photography for the entire series.
The series is loosely based on various works by 19th-century author Edgar Allan Poe (most famously the 1840 short story of the same name), and threads Poe’s unrelated stories and characters into a single, nonlinear narrative set between 1953 and 2023. The book chronicles both the rise to power of Roderick Usher, the powerful CEO of a corrupt pharmaceutical company,
his sister, Madeline Usher, the company’s genius COO, as well as the events that led to the deaths of all six of Roderick’s children. The film also stars Carla Gugino as Verna, an Usher family bitter thorn in her side, and Bruce Greenwood and Mary McDonnell as elderly Roderick and Madeline. The first two episodes of The Fall of the House of Usher premiered at Fantastic Fest in September 2023, and was released on Netflix the following month. The miniseries garnered over 13 million views in its first two weeks. The episode received positive reviews, with critics praising the production quality, direction, and acting (particularly Gugino, Greenwood, and Mark Hamill), but were divided on the storytelling, especially in relation to the original source material.

In November 2023, Roderick Usher, CEO of pharmaceutical company Fortunato Pharmaceuticals, loses all six of his children within two weeks. The night after the final funeral, Roderick C. invites Auguste Dupin, an assistant US attorney who has dedicated his career to exposing Fortunato’s corruption, to his childhood home where he tells the family’s true story and reveals the Usher family’s darkest secrets.
The series follows two timelines depicted on screen as Roderick’s narration in addition to conversations between Roderick and Dupin. The first timeline takes place from 1953 to 1980 and tells of Roderick and his twin sister Madeline’s youth and later development.
To gain power and fame, the second tracks all of the Ushers during the two weeks leading up to the conversation and uncovers the truth behind the deaths of Roderick’s children.
