The Kid Who Would Be King Movie Story
Alex, a twelve-year-old boy living in a London suburb, has just started secondary school. When his best friend, Bedders, is bullied by older students Lance and Kaye, Alex steps in to defend him. As a result, all three are given detention by the headmistress. Later, Lance and Kaye scheme to get back at Alex. That evening, they chase him as he heads home, but Alex manages to escape by hiding in a nearby construction site. There, he stumbles upon a mysterious sword embedded in concrete, which he pulls free. After showing it to Bedders, they discover that the markings identify the sword as Excalibur, the legendary weapon of King Arthur. Alex playfully “knights” Bedders with it.
Meanwhile, the evil sorceress Morgana awakens from her slumber underground and sends her demonic army, the Mortes Milles, to retrieve Excalibur. The next day, a teenage boy appears at Alex’s school, claiming to be a new student. However, this boy soon reveals himself to Alex as Merlin, the wizard from Arthurian legend, capable of aging backward but occasionally transforming into his elder form. Merlin warns Alex that he has just four days to defeat Morgana, or she will enslave all of Britain. At first, Alex wants nothing to do with these ancient myths and even tries to return the sword. But after Merlin saves him from a demon, Alex realizes the danger is real. The Mortes Milles only manifest at night and can only be seen by Alex and those he has knighted. However, an upcoming total solar eclipse will allow Morgana to fully emerge into the world. Alex begins to see connections between these events and an old storybook his estranged father gave him, leading him to believe he may be a descendant of King Arthur. With this new sense of purpose, Alex knights Lance and Kaye, who join him and Bedders to form a new Round Table. Together, they defeat several demons, even using a car as a weapon. Merlin then gives Alex the next step in their quest: to find the entrance to Morgana’s Underworld prison and stop her once and for all.
The Kid Who Would Be King Movie Review
While the young actors show potential for the future, their performances in this film were somewhat bland, lacking the emotional depth needed to fully engage the audience. The four main characters rarely displayed any real emotion, making it difficult to connect with their journey. The one standout was Angus Imrie, who played young Merlin. His eccentric and lively portrayal was one of the film’s highlights, though there were moments where he may have gone a bit over the top.
The villain, Morgana, felt underdeveloped and her motivations unclear, which diminished the overall impact of the story. A longer runtime could have helped resolve some of these issues, giving the plot and characters more room to grow. Additionally, the film relied heavily on certain events unfolding in a specific way if one of those elements hadn’t happened, the entire plot would have fallen apart. In the end, while The Kid Who Would Be King might be enjoyable for younger audiences, it doesn’t quite hold up as a full family experience.
