The Midnight Club is an American horror-mystery-thriller television series created by Mike Flanagan and Leah Fong, with Flanagan serving as showrunner, head writer, and executive producer. The series is set in a hospice where eight terminally ill young adults form a “Midnight Club” that meets every night to tell scary stories. The series features an overarching storyline, but these stories are also frequently depicted on screen. The series is primarily based on Christopher Pike’s 1994 novel The Midnight Club, but also adapts short stories from 27 of Pike’s other books, which appear within the Midnight Club story itself.
In the series, Iman Benson, Aidia, Igby Rigney, Ruth Codd, Aya Furukawa, Anara Shepherd, William Chris Sumpter, and Saurian Sapkota play the eight members of the Midnight Club, alongside Heather Langenkamp, Zach Gilford, Matt Beadle, and Samantha Sloyan, as elderly people who work at or live near the hospice. In addition to the main characters, the cast also plays people who appear in the story of “The Midnight Club”.
The Midnight Club premiered on Netflix on October 7, 2022. Unlike all three of Flanagan’s previous series, it was planned as a two-season limited series, not a miniseries. However, in December 2022, the series was canceled after one season. Flanagan quickly posted on Tumblr outlining his plans for the second season and tying up some loose ends.
The Midnight Club Story
In the mid-1990s, a teenager named Ilonka is diagnosed with terminal thyroid cancer, which upsets her because she was second best in college despite having a good chance at it. Because of a vision she had, Ilonka decides to go to Brightcliff Hospice Care for Teens, where a teenager named Julia Jayne was supposedly cured of thyroid cancer decades ago. At Brightcliff, Ilonka gets to know the teens who already live there. She befriends Kevin, who has leukemia, but has trouble with his roommate, Anya. On the first night, just before midnight, Ilonka follows Anya to the library, where the teens have gathered for a secret meeting of the “Midnight Club.
In this club, they tell each other scary stories and make a pact that the first person who dies will try to come back to tell the others if there is an afterlife. As part of her introduction to the club, Ilonka tells a semi-fictional story about Julia Jayne.
The Midnight Club Review
It’s a really moving, heartfelt series. I’m a bit baffled that other reviews are comparing this to The Haunting of Hill House/Bly Manor just because they were made by the same person. They are completely different and not even worth comparing. If you’re expecting a horror series, this probably isn’t what you’re looking for, but if you like a young adult series with a bit of depth and emotion, definitely check it out.

Some say the series isn’t well written and the characters aren’t well developed, but the whole concept of a group that gets together every night to tell stories is that they tell a story as they reveal their own characters. It’s very well done and the similarities between those characters are very clear because the same actors are playing the characters in the story. Anya is a wonderfully crafted character and worth watching throughout.
My only real criticism concerns the deleted final scene of the final episode. It’s clearly meant as a cliffhanger to make you want to watch the next season, but honestly, it’s a gimmick and doesn’t fit with the story that’s been building throughout. I wish they’d kept the raw, emotional scenes from before, because that’s what this series is about.
