8 Thottakkal (transl. 8 Bullets) is a 2017 Indian Tamil-language crime thriller film marking the directorial debut of Sri Ganesh. Produced by Vellapandian, the film features Vetri in the lead role, supported by an ensemble cast including Aparna Balamurali, Nassar, M. S. Bhaskar, and Meera Mithun. Filming took place in Chennai from August to November 2016, with the movie releasing on April 7, 2017. Loosely inspired by the 1949 Japanese film Stray Dog, 8 Thottakkal has been remade in several languages: Kannada as 8MM Bullet (2018), Telugu as Senapathi (2021), and Malayalam as Corona Papers (2023).
After serving as an assistant director to Mysskin on Onaayum Aattukkuttiyum (2013), Sri Ganesh began developing his own script, envisioning a cop thriller. He expressed that the film explores how criminals exploit specific situations, which deepened his understanding of police officers’ mindsets. Ganesh drew inspiration from real-life incidents and literature, particularly the mystery series of Inspector Martin Beck. He also interviewed a policeman involved in the 2012 Velachery encounters, where five suspected bank robbers were shot dead, partially basing Nassar’s character on this officer. Production commenced in August 2016 and wrapped in November 2016, with filming predominantly taking place in Chennai over 47 days. Newcomer Vetri was cast as the lead, playing a sub-inspector, while his family produced the film. Aparna Balamurali was signed on as the lead actress shortly after her debut in Maheshinte Prathikaaram (2016), portraying a scribe. Meera Mithun also appeared in the film, marking her first release. The cast included veteran actors Nassar and M. S. Bhaskar, with Ranjith, the brother of Kaaka Muttai actor Ramesh, making his debut as a petty thief.

Thottakkal Movie Story
The film follows Sathya, an orphan who overcomes a troubled past to become a police officer after being framed for a crime as a child. Despite his integrity, he faces ostracism from corrupt colleagues, particularly Inspector Gunasekaran (Guna), who tries to undermine him. Sathya’s troubles escalate when he loses his gun while shadowing a gangster, leading to a tragic bank robbery where a little girl is killed. Suspended from duty, Sathya seeks to clear his name with the help of a reporter, Meera. As the plot unfolds, Sathya uncovers a complex web of corruption involving Guna and an old policeman, Krishnamurthy.
Krishnamurthy, who has his own dark secrets, turns out to be the mastermind behind the robbery. After a series of violent confrontations, including Guna’s murder, Sathya finds himself in a tense standoff with Krishnamurthy, who, facing terminal illness and a desire to protect his family from shame, ultimately takes his own life. The film concludes with Sathya confronting his past when he encounters the employer who falsely accused him, leaving viewers with a powerful commentary on justice and morality.
