X-Men: Apocalypse Movie Story
In 3600 BC, the ancient and powerful mutant En Sabah Nur rules over Egypt. During a ceremony to transfer his consciousness into another man’s body for a healing boost, he is betrayed by conspirators, leading to the death of his followers, the Horsemen of Apocalypse, and his own entombment. Fast forward to 1983, Scott Summers discovers his mutant ability to shoot concussive energy blasts from his eyes. His older brother Alex brings him to Professor Charles Xavier’s school, hoping that Xavier and Hank McCoy can help Scott learn to control his powers. Upon his arrival, Scott befriends Jean Grey.
Meanwhile, En Sabah Nur awakens in Egypt, thanks to Moira MacTaggert, while observing a group of worshippers. He encounters Ororo Munroe, a mutant who can manipulate the weather, and learns about humanity. Disillusioned with the state of mankind, he decides to reshape the world, and after enhancing Ororo’s powers, she becomes one of his followers. In Communist Poland, Erik Lehnsherr lives a peaceful life with his wife Magda and their daughter Nina. However, as disturbances caused by En Sabah Nur ripple across the globe, Erik uses his powers to save a coworker during an earthquake, drawing the attention of the Milicja Obywatelska. They take Nina hostage in the forest to force Erik’s surrender. In a tragic turn of events, Nina inadvertently reveals her animal communication powers during the standoff, leading to her mother’s and sister’s deaths at the hands of the police. Heartbroken, Erik retaliates by killing the officers involved.
X-Men: Apocalypse Movie Review
While it’s clearly different from the Age of Apocalypse comic series, I still think this film is a worthy addition to the X-Men roster. Personally, I would have liked it to be a bit longer and to see Apocalypse take a more active role rather than just standing around. That said, it does hold up as a solid X-Men movie. I really enjoyed the stunts and practical effects, and the CGI moments looked fantastic. Overall, I’d rate it a solid 4 out of 5.
