Pearl is a 2022 American horror film directed, produced, and edited by Ti West and co-written by West and Mia Goth. It is the second part of West’s X film series and a prequel to X (2022). Goth reprises the role of the title character, with a supporting cast that includes David Corenswet, Tandy Wright, Matthew Sunderland, and Emma Jenkins-Puro. Pearl tells the origin story of the villain, whose passion to become a movie star led him to commit acts of violence on his family’s Texas estate in 1918.

West began co-writing the prequel screenplay during the filming of X, which was born out of his collaboration with Goth. Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the film, filming began in New Zealand immediately after the first film, using X sets and crew from Avatar: The Way of Water, and taking safety precautions during the pandemic. Pearl was inspired by Douglas Sirk’s work, Technicolor films such as The Wizard of Oz (1939) and Mary Poppins (1964), as well as Disney films. The film had its world premiere at the 79th Venice International Film Festival on September 3, 2022, and was released in U.S. theaters by A24 on September 16, 2022. The film grossed over $10 million and received positive reviews, with Goss’s acting receiving considerable praise.

The third film in the series, titled MaXXXine, was released on July 5, 2024. As a direct sequel to X, Goss reprises a different role from the first film. Ti West began writing the script for the prequel film while making X. He stated that the prequel project evolved from a story he worked on with Mia Goth and that he had seen it as a possible film, or simply as a backstory for Goth’s character Pearl in the first film. After the COVID-19 pandemic hit, West stated that seeing its impact on the film industry motivated him to continue working and decided to begin production on the prequel as soon as it was completed. West stated that he pitched the idea for a new series to A24 and was surprised when they greenlit his project. The filmmaker explained that he intended each film to have its own distinct style and horror genre. In explaining his approach to X, he stated that he was heavily influenced by the Texas Chainsaw Massacre series and the work of Mario Bava, which explores how the rise of independent filmmaking has impacted society. Regarding Pearl, West described it as a Douglas Sirk melodrama fused with the Technicolor style of Mary Poppins and The Wizard of Oz, made as “crazy Disney movies”, and said it would explore how Hollywood filmmaking has influenced people. West said he plans to continue this trend of exploring different styles and genres in the future. The film is a joint venture between A24 and Little Lamb Productions.

Along with the release of the first promotional poster, it was announced that West would return as producer, would also serve as film editor, Elliot Lockett would return as cinematographer, and Tyler Bates and Tim Williams would co-compose the film. Some of the film’s music.

Pearl Movie Story

In 1918, Pearl is a young woman living with her German immigrant parents on a Texas farm while her husband Howard serves in World War I. Her father is frail and paralyzed, and her strict mother, Ruth, insists that she help him and the farm while they are quarantined to protect them from the Spanish Flu. Pearl wants a career as a dancer or movie star, but Ruth disapproves and she suffers from loneliness. Pearl also shows signs of mental illness. She secretly abuses her father and kills animals, feeding them to an alligator she calls Seeda. One day, while visiting the city, Pearl meets a projectionist who takes a liking to her. After returning to the farm, Pearl continues to show signs of mental illness, such as dancing and masturbating on a scarecrow in the cornfield. At dinner, Ruth berates Pearl for her behavior and refuses to eat her.

Pearl hears from her wealthy sister-in-law Mitzi about auditions to find new dancers for a theater company across the state, and sees it as a chance to escape life on the farm and caring for her father. Later, she visits the projectionist, shows him the illegal bachelorette film “Free Ride,” and encourages him to follow his dreams. Pearl cannot abandon her family and says, “I wish they would die.”

Pearl Movie Review

The glorious prequel to the film X is a homage to many classic films and their stereotypes. It is a more psychological and fascinating work than the sequel. The protagonist has to help her sick father, but her lazy mother bullies her and destroys her dreams. This is (in my eyes) a darker version of The Wizard of Oz. A little girl has big dreams, but things and people prevent her. But in this version, despite the events, something dark is brewing in the girl’s heart. The acting and writing in Pearl are better than X, but I don’t think it holds up to the latter. The film is not horror, more confusing than psychological. The monologue at the end doesn’t make any case for this watered-down story. We don’t know what she was trying to accomplish or who she was speaking to directly. Overall, I think this film should drop the horror title and go under the historical drama category instead.
