The Invisible Man is a 2020 science fiction horror film written and directed by Leigh Whannell. It is based on the 1897 novel by H. G. Wells and is a remake of the 1933 film of the same name. Elisabeth Moss plays a woman who believes she is being followed and manipulated by her ex-boyfriend (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) after gaining the ability to become invisible. Aldis Hodge, Storm Reid, Harriet Dyer and Michael Dorman will star in supporting roles.

Development of a modern film adaptation of the novel began in 2006 but was cancelled in 2011. An attempt to revive the project in 2016 as part of Universal Pictures’ Dark Universe of Films was also cancelled following the critical and financial failure of 2017’s The Mummy. Development of the project resumed in 2019 with Whannell’s involvement after Universal moved from a serialized universe to standalone films.

The Invisible Man was released in the United States on February 28, 2020. Critics praised Whannell’s direction, Moss’s acting, the opening sequence, atmosphere, score, and themes of domestic violence. The film was also a commercial success, grossing $145 million worldwide against a budget of $7 million. The film was released for digital rental three weeks after its US premiere, as the COVID-19 pandemic ended its theatrical release prematurely.

Development of a new Invisible Man film began in 2006, when David S. Goyer was hired to write a screenplay. Goyer worked on the project until 2011, without the film being developed further. In February 2016, the project was revived, with Johnny Depp in the title role and Ed Solomon as screenwriter. It turned out to be part of a planned film universe that would remake Universal Pictures’ classic monster reboot. A planned film series was set to begin in 2017 with The Mummy, starring Tom Cruise, Sofia Boutella, and Russell Crowe. Mummy director Alex Kurtzman said fans should expect at least one film per year. However, after The Mummy was negatively received by critics and its box office performance was deemed insufficient by the studio, changes were made to the Dark Universe to focus on individual storytelling and move away from the concept of a shared universe.

The Invisible Man Movie Story

Cecilia Kass is stuck in an abusive and controlling relationship with Adrian Griffin, a wealthy optical engineer and businessman, and the founder and CEO of the human computer augmentation company Cobalt. One night, Cecilia gives Adrian diazepam and escapes from his heavily guarded house with the help of her sister, Emily.

Cecilia goes into hiding with her childhood friend, San Francisco police detective James Lanier, and his teenage daughter, Sydney. Two weeks after Cecilia’s escape, Adrian apparently commits suicide, leaving behind $5 million. His brother, lawyer Tom, takes charge of the arrangements. After some strange events, Cecilia suspects there is another presence in the house, but James assures her that she is just traumatized and delusional. During a job interview, Book is robbed and she passes out. Doctors say she has high levels of diazepam in her system. In the bathroom, she finds a bloody bottle of diazepam, the same one used to anesthetic Adrian.

Cecilia is accompanied by James to meet Tom. She believes Adrian faked his death and used his optical abilities to become invisible and torment her, but this idea is rejected. Sydney is then attacked by an invisible force and assumes it is Cecilia. While alone in the house, Cecilia tries various tactics to catch whoever she thinks attacked Sydney. She finds Adrian’s cell phone in the attic and soon receives a text message saying “Surprise”. Cecilia pours paint into the attic through a trap door, covering the invisible figure. A fierce battle ensues, but Cecilia manages to escape.

The Invisible Man Movie Review

This movie was a refreshing change. Not a typical horror movie, what Leigh Whannell (director) was able to do with a budget of only 7 million was outstanding. With a low budget, Whannell had to get creative, and he did. Every camera angle, every scene composition, every use of silence, every score was used skillfully to create a constant sense of creepiness and dread from the beginning to the end of the movie. Surprisingly, and fortunately, Whannell’s use of computer graphics effects was minimal, “probably due to budgetary constraints.” That’s not to say the effects weren’t good; in fact, they were very good and used appropriately in the right places in the movie.

Every actor was fantastic and believable in their roles, but Elisabeth Moss (lead actress) was perfect. Moss stole the show and proved she has what it takes to be an A-list actress by expressing the full range of emotions throughout the film.

I wouldn’t put this film solely in the horror category, but it does have some short, graphic moments. It’s definitely a suspense/thriller. If you’re someone who likes a good suspense/thriller with great writing, direction, acting, and a bit of scares, you won’t be disappointed.
