Black Widow is a 2021 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics series and featuring the character of the same name. It is the 24th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. The film was directed by Cate Shortland from a screenplay by Eric Pearson and stars Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow alongside Florence Pugh, David Harbour, O-T. Fagbenle, Olga Kurylenko, William Hurt, Ray Winstone, and Rachel Weisz. Set after the events of Captain America: Civil War (2016), the film finds Romanoff, on the run, forced to confront her past as a Russian spy before becoming an Avenger. Lionsgate Films began development on a Black Widow film in April 2004, with David Hayter signed on to write and direct. The project did not move forward, and the film rights to the character reverted to Marvel Studios by June 2006. Johansson has starred in the role in several MCU films, starting with Iron Man 2 (2010), and began discussions with Marvel about a solo film. Work began in late 2017, and Shortland was hired in July 2018. Jac Schaeffer and Ned Benson had joined the script before Pearson joined. The film was written as a prequel to expand Romanoff’s story and conclude her MCU history following the character’s death in Avengers: Endgame (2019). Director Shortland stated that the film is the most violent MCU film to date, with an emphasis on fight scenes. Filming took place between May and October 2019 in Norway, the United Kingdom, Budapest, Morocco, and Macon, Georgia.

Black Widow premiered at events around the world on June 29, 2021, and was released simultaneously in theaters and on Disney+ with Premier Access in the United States on July 9. It is the first film in the MCU’s Phase 4 and has been delayed three times from its original May 2020 release date due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Black Widow broke several pandemic box office records, grossing over $379 million worldwide. The film received positive reviews from critics, who particularly praised the action sequences and the acting of Johansson and Pugh. In July 2021, Johansson filed a lawsuit against Disney over the simultaneous release, which was settled two months later.

Feige met with Johansson in October 2017 to discuss directing a Black Widow film. Marvel then began meeting with screenwriters for the project, including Jac Schaeffer and Jessica Gao. Gao’s pitch was influenced by Grosse Pointe Blank (1997), in which Romanoff infiltrates a high school to assassinate a target, then attends her high school reunion 20 years later, where she must deal with the consequences of her previous actions. The pitch heavily featured the She-Hulk character, and Marvel Studios CEO Brad Winderbaum thought Gao wanted to pitch a She-Hulk film featuring Black Widow instead. Gao was later hired as head writer for the Marvel Studios television series She-Hulk: The Attorney (2022). Schafer met with Feige in December and was approached to write the script in late 2017. Schafer and Johansson were scheduled to discuss directing the film in early February 2018.

In 1995, super soldier Alexei Shostakov and Black Widow assassin Melina Vostkov are working as Russian undercover agents in Ohio, posing as a family, with Natasha Romanoff and Yelena Belova as their daughters. They steal information from S.H.I.E.L.D. and flee to Cuba, where their superior, General Drakov, takes Romanoff and Belova to the Red Room to be trained as widows. Decades later, Shostakov is imprisoned in Russia, while Romanoff and Belova become successful as dangerous assassins. Romanoff eventually runs to S.H.I.E.L.D. He helps Clint Barton blow up Drakov’s office in Budapest, presumably killing Drakov and his young daughter Antonia.

In 2016, Romanoff was on the run for violating the Sokovia Accords. She fled from United States Secretary of State Thaddeus Ross and sought refuge in Norway arranged by Rick Mason. Meanwhile, Belova kills a former rebel widow, but in the process comes into contact with a synthetic gas that neutralizes the Red Room’s chemical mind control agent. Belova sends Romanoff a vial of the antidote in the hope that she and the Avengers can free the other widows and goes into hiding. As Romanoff unknowingly drives away with the vial in her car, she is attacked by Taskmaster, a Red Room agent. Romanoff escapes from Taskmaster and realizes that the vial came from Budapest. There, she finds Belova, who reveals that Drakov is alive and that the Red Room is still active. They are attacked by the Widows and Taskmaster, but Romanoff and Belova manage to escape them and are met up with Mason, who provides them with a helicopter.

Black Widow Movie Review

Black Widow was fun, intense, and entertaining. It had its own dark weirdness, but seemed to fit in well with the rest of the MCU. Then there was Scarlett Johansson, who gave a fantastic performance. I’m really sad that this will be her last appearance on the big screen as Natasha Romanoff. As for Florence Pugh as Elena, it was just a chef’s kiss. She gave her all to this fascinating character, and I’d love to see Yelena more often in the MCU.

Not to mention Rachel Weisz and David Harbour, who were also fantastic on screen and added to the family-like dynamic with Scarlett and Florence.

All in all, this is a movie everyone should see. The film has an excellent soundtrack, CGI and fight scenes, and for the first time, it feels like we’re finally seeing a non-objectified portrayal of Natasha.
