Mimi is a 2021 Indian Hindi drama film directed by Laxman Utekar and produced by Dinesh Vijan under Maddock Films. It is a remake of the Marathi film Mala Aayi Vihaich! Kriti Sanon plays the eponymous protagonist, who decides to become a surrogate mother for a foreign couple. Pankaj Tripathi, Sai Tamhankar, Manoj Pahwa, Supriya Pathak, Evelyn Edwards and Aidan Whitek appear in supporting roles.
Mimi was announced in August 2019. Filming took place in Rajasthan and Mumbai from October 2019 to January 2021, but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The film’s music and soundtrack were composed by A.R. Rahman, and the lyrics were written by Amitabh Bhattacharya. After no theatrical release due to the pandemic, Mimi was scheduled for a digital release through streaming services Netflix and JioCinema on July 30, 2021. However, the film was accidentally released by JioCinema and ended up on torrent sites, so the release across platforms only happened four days earlier, on July 26, 2021.
In April 2019, The Times of India reported that Kriti Sanon would star in a film about surrogacy. Dinesh Vijan’s production company Maddock Films is reportedly backing the project. The film was officially announced in August 2019, followed by the release of a poster and reports that it would star Sanon and Pankaj Tripathi in the lead roles. It was also confirmed that the film is based on the Marathi film Mala Aai Vhhayachy (2011). In an interview with India Today, Dinesh Vijan stated that Mimi is not an inspirational story, but a story based on real events. For him, the film depicts a beautiful relationship between a woman who did not want to be a mother and one who cannot wait to become one. He called the unexpected part of the plot “humorous”. Sanon added: “There is going to be a lot of humour and situational comedy in it. At the same time, there are a lot of characters that I would love to bring home. For Sanon, Mimi was a film that he signed on when he heard the idea, but not the script. She later realised that the role had a lot to offer her as an actress. She gained 15 kilograms to suit the role of a pregnant woman. In an interview with Hindustan Times, she was quoted as saying, “I had to shoot the pregnancy scenes and Laxman made it clear that I would need to gain weight for these scenes as he did not want the character to be chiseled.” Actress Sai Tamhankar was persuaded to play a key role in the film and co-star alongside Tripathi. It was reported that she learned Urdu and Rajasthani dialects to prepare for the role as she was to play a Muslim woman from Rajasthan.

Mimi Movie Story
Mimi Rathore, a stage dancer from Rajasthan, wants to break into Bollywood as an actress. After a performance, a taxi driver named Bhanu approaches her with an offer: he introduces Mimi to John and Samar, an American couple looking for a surrogate mother. As Samar is unable to have children, the couple are willing to pay the surrogate 20 million rupees ($24,000). Mimi agrees, hoping this will help her film star ambitions. The IVF is successful and Mimi becomes pregnant. Under the pretext of leaving for a nine-month location shoot, Mimi goes into hiding with her friend Shama. Meanwhile, Bhanu is tasked by John and Summer to look after Mimi during her pregnancy.
A few months later, Mimi’s doctor tells John and Summer that there is a chance that the baby will be born with Down’s syndrome. John and Summer are shocked and suddenly change their minds about wanting a child. They ask Mimi to abort the pregnancy and return to America.

The story takes unexpected turns, challenges societal norms and questions the meaning of motherhood. The strength of this story lies in its ability to paint its characters in shades of grey, making them deeply human and relatable. Pankaj Tripathi as Bhanu Pratap Pandey and Sai Tamhankar as Shama provide excellent support, adding further emotional depth to the story.
What sets Mimi apart is that it doesn’t try to shy away from the harsh realities of life. It explores the ethical dilemmas of surrogacy, the societal pressures women face and the lengths a mother will go to to protect her child. The film’s ability to handle these sensitive themes with grace and empathy is commendable.
