Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is a 2022 American animated adventure fantasy comedy film produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by Universal Pictures. It is a sequel to the spin-off film Puss in Boots (2011) and the sixth film in the Shrek film series. It is directed by Joel Crawford, co-directed by Januel Mercado (in his feature film debut), and written by Paul Fisher and Tommy Swerdlow. and Tom Wheeler. The voice cast is based on characters featured in Shrek the Second (2004),
which is inspired by the fairy tale of the same name. The voice cast includes Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek, who reprise their roles as the title character and Kitty Softpaws, respectively. New cast members include Harvey Guillen, Florence Pugh, Olivia Colman, Ray Winstone, Samson Kayo, John Mulaney, and Wagner Moura. Planning for a Puss in Boots sequel began in November 2012, but was stuck in development hell until it was revived in November 2018. Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri was confirmed as executive producer. In February 2019, it was announced that the film would be directed by Bob Persichetti, story helmer for the first film and co-director of Sony Pictures Animation’s Spider-Man:
The New Universe (2018). However, Crawford signed with Mercado and replaced Persichetti as director in March 2021. The story is inspired by spaghetti westerns, with The Rogues (1966) cited as a particular influence. The film’s style takes inspiration from Spider-Man: The New Universe. The use of new technology allowed the team to give the film a painterly style similar to a fairy tale story, and to deviate from the visual style of previous Shrek series.
