Jailer is a 2023 Indian Tamil-language action comedy film written and directed by Nelson Dhilipkumar and produced by Kalanithi Maran under Sun Pictures. The film stars Rajinikanth in the lead role with Vinayakant, Ramya Krishnan, Tamannaah Bhatia, Vasanth Ravi, Mirna Menon, Yogi Babu and Sunil in supporting roles. Mohanlal, Siva Rajkumar and Jackie Shroff guest star. The film revolves around “Tiger” Muthuvel Pandian, a former prison warden who tries to arrest the eccentric idol smuggler Varman.

The film was officially announced in February 2022 with the working title Thalaivar 169, making it Rajinikanth’s 169th film, although the official title was announced in June the same year. Principal photography began in Chennai in August 2022, followed by Cuddalore, Hyderabad, Jaisalmer, Mangalore and Kerala. Filming is expected to be completed in early June 2023. Music is composed by Anirudh Ravichander, cinematography is by Vijay Kartik Kannan and editing is by R. Nirmal.

The Jailer was released in theatres on August 10, 2023 to positive reviews, becoming the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2023, the sixth highest-grossing Indian film of 2023 and the second highest-grossing Tamil film of all time. A sequel is also in the works. During the filming of Master (2021) in late 2019, Lokesh Kanagaraj reportedly visited Rajinikanth’s residence in Chennai to discuss a possible collaboration. The project, which would have been Rajinikanth’s 169th film, was set to be produced by Kamal Haasan’s Raj Kamal Films International.[10][11] However, the COVID-19 pandemic and Rajinikanth’s commitments to Annaate (2021) delayed the film’s release, and Kanagaraj decided to co-star with Haasan in Vikram (2022).

In December 2021, it was reported that Nelson would be directing Dilipumal Rajinikanth’s 169th film after completing his commitments for Beast (2022). In February 2022, a Times of India article reported that Nelson had not completed his next film and said that the project with Nelson was a mistake. However, on February 10, 2022, Sun Pictures officially announced the project with the working title Thalaivar 169. This is also Nelson’s first collaboration with Rajnikanth. The project was expected to be shot in various locations within five to six months. After Nelson was criticized for his direction and the mixed reactions to The Beast, there was speculation that he would be removed from the project and replaced with another director. However, the producers dismissed the rumors and confirmed Nelson’s involvement in the film.The official title of the film, Jailer, was announced on June 17, 2022. Rajinikanth received an advance salary of Rs 110 million before his release.

Muthuvel Pandian is a former police officer who lives with his family in Tamil Nadu. Muthuvel’s son, ACP Arjun, is investigating an eccentric Malayali gangster, Varman, who is smuggling idols of gods from Arakkonam and selling them to overseas buyers. Arjun confronts Varman’s henchman, Seenu, and asks him about Varman’s whereabouts. Just as they are about to nab Varman, Arjun suddenly disappears and the police cover it up by spreading the news that he committed suicide due to work stress.

Muthuvel mourns the death of his son and blames himself for raising him to be an honest and fearless person. He goes looking for Seenu and kills him. He disposes of the body with the help of an unsuspecting local taxi driver, Vimal. In retaliation, Varman’s men attempt to kill Muthuvel’s grandson Rithvik, but Muthuvel manages to save him. Muthuvel tries to convince Varman to leave him and his family alone, but to no avail. Angry, he decides to fight back.
