The screenplay, written by Creighton Rothenberger, Katrin Benedikt, Chad St. John, and Christian Gudegast, is the second installment in the Has Fallen film series, following Antoine Fuqua’s 2013 film Olympus Has Fallen. The movie stars Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart, and Morgan Freeman, with supporting roles featuring Alon Moni Aboutboul, Angela Bassett, Robert Forster, Jackie Earle Haley, Melissa Leo, Radha Mitchell, Sean O’Bryan, Waleed Zuaiter, and Charlotte Riley.

The plot centers around a conspiracy to assassinate world leaders attending the British Prime Minister’s funeral in London. Secret Service agent Mike Banning must race against time to protect President Benjamin Asher from Islamic terrorists. Filming commenced in London on October 24, 2014, paused for a Christmas break in November, and resumed in February 2015. The film was released by Focus Features under the revived Gramercy Pictures label on March 4, 2016. It grossed $205 million worldwide but received negative reviews for its production values, special effects, and action sequences. A third installment, titled Angel Has Fallen, was released on August 23, 2019.

G8 intelligence agencies track down Pakistani arms trafficker and terrorist mastermind Aamir Barkawi at his compound, greenlighting a U.S. Air Force drone strike during his daughter’s wedding. The strike kills Barkawi’s family and seemingly takes him out as well.

Two years later, British Prime Minister James Wilson unexpectedly passes away, prompting the G7 leaders to gather for his funeral in London. Secret Service Director Lynne Jacobs assigns Agent Mike Banning to head the security detail for U.S. President Benjamin Asher, even though Banning’s wife Leah is set to give birth in a few weeks. The group arrives at Stansted Airport aboard Air Force One, and Banning arranges for an earlier transfer to Somerset House in London via Marine One. As Asher’s Presidential State Car approaches St. Paul’s Cathedral, a well-coordinated attack is launched by mercenaries led by Barkawi’s son, Kamran. Disguised as Metropolitan Police, Queen’s Guardsmen, and other first responders, they initiate a violent assault on the city, resulting in the deaths of leaders from Canada, Germany, Japan, Italy, and France, while causing extensive damage and widespread panic.

I came across this film on Netflix and didn’t have high expectations, but I was genuinely surprised by its entertainment value and realism. I found myself completely hooked and unable to stop watching. Unfortunately, I stumbled upon some reviews from people whose opinions seemed quite out there, probably those who voted for Donald Trump and enjoy pro wrestling. While some of the dialogue was unintentionally funny, there were moments of campy lines that added to the charm. There’s nothing more satisfying than watching a movie and wishing it would never end, or hoping for sequels or more episodes to continue the story.
