Mandaar is the first in the Hoichoi World Classics library, where Hoichoi aims to recreate several global literary works in an OTT format for the contemporary Bengali milieu. Published on Hoichoi on November 19, 2021 widely praised the series, particularly for its cinematography, performances, make-up, and background music.
Sankayan Ghosh of Film Companin praised the series, commenting that “Mandaar is a dramatic, suspenseful, moving epic that fascinates and entertains. Ishita Sengupta of News Nine rated the series 3.5/5, praising the lesser known cast, production design, and direction. Shaheen Irani of OTTplay.com gave the series a 3.5/5 rating, stating that Bhattacharya’s direction “focuses on the details and makes the most of his environments and characters.
Production began in October 2020. The series was shot extensively in Mandarmani and Tajpur in Medinipur district of West Bengal.

Mandaar Story
The episode begins with an old witch named Mojnu Bhuri sitting in a boat while her ward Ped dances like a madman. As Mojnu Bhuri is making a prophecy to herself, a man on a motorbike passes by the prophet. Ped sees the man and says “Mandar”.
The next scene shows how a supervisor named Mokkai is turning all the fishermen against their boss, a powerful leader named Dabul Bhai. When Mokkai rejects Dabul Bhai’s call, a worried Dabul Bhai calls Mandar, Dabul Bhai’s henchman, and his partner, Modon Haldar, a local politician. Mandar picks up his business associate Bonka and comes to Dabul Bhai’s residence where he is instructed to get rid of his childhood friend Mokkai. Though hesitant at first, Mandar accepts the offer and leaves with Bonka. The duo confronts Mokkai while he is returning home and they force him to have a drink with them. Meanwhile, Moncha (Dabul Bhai’s son) is enraged to find out that Lakhmoni (Modon’s sister) is in a romantic relationship with Fontus (Bonka’s son). He calls Modon and angrily tells him to bring his sister under control as she is getting out of control. While the two are sailing on a boat, Mokkai gossips with them, unaware of the two’s true intentions. Mandar feels torn, but ignores his feelings and strangles Mokkai to death and disposes of the body. In the evening, when the two return to Dabul Bhai’s house, they encounter Mojnu Buri, who prophesies that “Mandar will be the work of the King of Gairpur and Bhonka will be the ‘father of a king.

I mean, who doesn’t love a real Shakespearean tragedy where we see how excessive ambition and its consequences can overpower the strongest and most obedient?
Yes, it’s Macbeth again.
Anirban Bhattacharya’s Mandal is a great adaptation of Macbeth. This man has truly captured the essence of Shakespeare’s work and brought it to the screen.
You have to admit that Anirban is tech savvy. Very impressive direction, cinematography, sound, he got everything right. Not just technically, but morally too: he makes excellent use of the “psychological reflections” and “guilt and destiny” of his characters.
