Tales of the City Story
Anna Madrigal’s 90th birthday celebration at 28 Barbary Lane marks the return of Mary Ann Singleton to San Francisco after a 23-year absence. While Mary Ann joyfully reunites with her former roommate Michael Tolliver and her beloved landlady Anna, the atmosphere is tense with her ex-husband, Brian Hawkins, and their daughter, Shawna, whom she left behind to pursue a broadcasting career.
Michael is thriving in a relationship with a younger man, Ben Marshall, while Shawna engages in a one-night stand with documentarian Claire Duncan. Meanwhile, transgender man Jake Rodriguez grapples with his unexpected attraction to men. Mary Ann is taken aback to discover that Shawna has never been informed that she and Brian are not her biological parents. As the celebration unfolds, Anna receives a mysterious note, adding an air of intrigue to the gathering.
Tales of the City Review
Definitely worth a watch, although you might want to fast-forward through the last third. It’s wonderful to see Anna, Mary Ann, Brian, and Dee Dee back in action. While Mouse has changed quite a bit, it’s exciting to see him return, especially as he’s played by the talented actor from season one of The White Lotus—he really brings something special to the character.

Elliot Page delivers an outstanding performance as well. I also loved seeing Anna’s best friend from her early days in San Francisco, although she doesn’t seem to have aged quite as gracefully by the end.
Getting a glimpse into Anna’s backstory was a highlight, but unfortunately, the plot seemed to lose momentum not long after that. The production quality is terrific, but there are some significant pacing issues toward the conclusion.
