The Conjuring is a 2013 American supernatural horror film directed by James Wan, with a screenplay by Chad Hayes and Carey W. Hayes. It marks the first entry in The Conjuring Universe franchise. The film stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as Ed and Lorraine Warren, paranormal investigators and authors known for their involvement in notable haunting cases, including the inspiration for The Amityville Horror and its film adaptations.
Set in 1971, the story follows the Warrens as they help the Perron family, who are experiencing increasingly disturbing occurrences in their newly acquired farmhouse in Rhode Island. Development of the film began in January 2012, with Wan confirmed as the director for a project initially titled The Warren Files, which was later renamed The Conjuring. Filming took place in Wilmington, North Carolina, starting in February 2012, and the scenes were shot in chronological order. The film was released in the United States and Canada on July 19, 2013, by Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema. It received positive reviews from critics and grossed over $319 million worldwide against a budget of $20 million. A sequel, The Conjuring 2, followed in 2016.Producer Tony DeRosa-Grund wrote the original treatment for what would become The Conjuring. For nearly 14 years, he attempted to bring the film to life but faced numerous setbacks. He eventually secured a deal with Gold Circle Films, the company behind The Haunting in Connecticut, but unfortunately, a contract could not be finalized, leading to the deal being dropped.

In 1971, Roger and Carolyn Perron move into a farmhouse in Harrisville, Rhode Island, along with their five daughters: Andrea, Nancy, Christine, Cindy, and April. Their dog, Sadie, refuses to enter the house, sensing something amiss. Shortly after moving in, the family discovers a boarded-up cellar, and strange paranormal events begin to unfold during their first few nights. Every clock in the house inexplicably stops at 3:07 a.m., Carolyn wakes up each morning with new bruises, and Sadie is found dead in the yard. Both Carolyn and Christine have encounters with a malevolent spirit.
Concerned for their safety, Carolyn reaches out to the Warrens. During an initial investigation, Lorraine, a clairvoyant, senses that a dark entity has attached itself to the family, indicating that leaving the house won’t provide them with relief. To gather evidence, the Warrens set up cameras and bells around the property, enlisting the help of their assistant Drew Thomas and police officer Brad Hamilton. Their research uncovers a chilling history: the farmhouse once belonged to an accused witch and Satanist named Bathsheba Sherman, who was a relative of Mary Towne Eastey. Bathsheba allegedly sacrificed her week-old baby to the devil and took her own life in 1863 at 3:07 a.m., cursing anyone who dared to inhabit her land. Over the years, numerous reports of murders and suicides have emerged from the properties built on this land, deepening the family’s sense of dread.
The Conjuring Review
I might be more forgiving if there was anything truly original in this movie, but it falls into familiar religious horror tropes. Witches are portrayed as evil, demons possess people, and only a couple of well-meaning Christians can save the day. I’ve seen these themes executed better elsewhere, including more effective exorcism scenes.
The idea of a witch demon using telekinesis to fire a rifle was unique, but it ended up being a low point in what should have been a terrifying moment. Similarly, the laundry scene, where the witch’s spirit supposedly controls the weather, only made me laugh when it was meant to be chilling. To be fair, the film has its strengths. It creates a good atmosphere and features some solid scares without relying heavily on loud jump scares, especially in the early parts like many horror films do. While it can be suspenseful and scary at times, it ultimately doesn’t live up to the hype. It might be worth a watch if you’re looking for something thrilling, but don’t expect it to break new ground.
