Wind River is a 2017 neo-Western crime film written and directed by Taylor Sheridan, marking the third in his series exploring the modern American West. During winter on the Wind River Indian Reservation, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Agent Cory Lambert discovers the frozen body of 18-year-old Natalie Hanson, a member of the Northern Arapaho tribe. FBI Special Agent Jane Banner is called in to investigate the suspected homicide. While talking with Natalie’s father, Martin, Banner learns that Natalie had recently been dating someone, but Martin doesn’t know the boyfriend’s name.

An autopsy reveals that Natalie suffered blunt trauma and rape before dying from pulmonary hemorrhage caused by inhaling freezing air. Despite the evidence, the medical examiner refuses to label her death a homicide, preventing Banner from securing additional support from her FBI superiors. Lambert, with information from Natalie’s brother Chip, learns that her boyfriend was Matt Rayburn, a security guard at a nearby oil drilling site. Not long after, Lambert and Banner discover Matt’s mutilated, naked body in the snow. Lambert confides in Banner that his own 16-year-old daughter, Emily, died in a similar way three years earlier, a case that remains unresolved.

Wind River Movie Review

Wind River is a gripping murder mystery set on a Native American reservation. The story begins when a wildlife ranger discovers the body of Natalie, a young Native American woman, in the snowy wilderness of Wyoming. She has a head wound and shows signs of sexual assault. With the help of an FBI officer and the local community, the ranger, Cory, works to unravel the mystery of her death. Haunted by his own past, Cory is driven not just to solve the crime, but to confront his inner demons.

The setting, the Wind River Reservation, is a remote and harsh landscape in central Wyoming, where the understaffed police force struggles to manage such serious cases. Though the film addresses the rape and colonial injustices faced by Native Americans, much of the focus shifts to the white characters who intervene. It is at its best when dealing with existential themes like grief and the isolating harshness of life in Wyoming’s frozen wilderness, rather than forcing its political message. The film brings attention to an important issue, highlighted in the closing scenes: the alarming rates of missing Native American women, especially young girls, who often go unnoticed by the system. In contrast, missing white people receive far more attention. The film is unsettling, particularly during its intense scenes of violence and sexual assault, which are hard to watch. Despite the disturbing content, I found the film thought-provoking and well-made, as it left me reflecting deeply on these issues long after it ended.
