Chita is a 2023 Indian Tamil-language thriller film written and directed by S. U. Arun Kumar and produced by Nimisha Sajayan (making her Tamil debut) and Siddharth opposite Anjali. Played by Nair, the film also stars Baby Sahasra Shree and Baby S. Aafiya Tasneem. The film revolves around the relationship between a paternal uncle and his niece, who goes through several situations following the disappearance of his niece. Kumar hatched the idea for the story after coming across an article on child sexual abuse and meeting with child abuse victims, government officials and NGOs who gave him feedback on his idea before finalising the script. The film was shot over 69 days in and around Palani. Camerawork was by Balaji Subramanyam and editing was by Suresh A. Prasad. Div Ninan Thomas and Santosh Narayanan composed the soundtrack and Vishal Chandrashekhar composed the music for the film. Chitha was released in theatres on September 29, 2023 and was highly praised for its performances, storytelling, direction and themes. The film was a commercial success at the box office. At the 69th Filmfare Awards South, the film won seven awards including Best Picture (Tamil).
The idea for the film was born from his experience of learning about several child sexual abuse cases through newspapers and articles. Based on this, he wrote a novel titled Kolkata Days about the 1996 Suryaneri rape case. These experiences ultimately led to developing the theme and idea of the film. He researched several real-life cases of child sexual abuse and met with police officers, NGO members and survivors of child sexual abuse. Based on extensive research, he wrote a 440-page draft of the story idea, which he rewrote and then shortened to 220 pages. The script was then read by his team and their families. “I produced and acted in Chitha because when I read the script and saw what we were doing, I felt something. I thought it would be a very important film if I could convey that to the whole audience. He works in any language because when you see him, you see him as a person, not as someone from a particular place or a particular mother tongue. If the makers set it right, the script will take the lead.

Mr. Easwaran is a civil servant from Palani who has a deep bond with his 8-year-old niece Sundari and is very protective of her. Eswaran also has a few close friends, one of whom happens to be an undercover cop named Vadivelu, whose niece Ponni is a good friend of Sundari’s. Ponni is unable to understand the romantic conversation between her sister and her boyfriend and is convinced that there is a herd of deer in the forest near her school. She asks Sundari if she would like to see the animals after school.
The two girls leave Easwaran and plan to go to the area alone. Ponni and Sundari take an autorickshaw to go there as planned, but Sundari gets scared and leaves Ponni behind to go see the scene alone. The next day, Ponni’s father accuses Easwaran of attacking Ponni, but Vadivelu realises that Easwaran is innocent and apologises to him.

A heartbreaking film that deals with the dark and sensitive subject of child sexual abuse. The story revolves around Siddharth, a loving uncle who becomes the only father figure to his niece after the untimely death of their father. He also shares a deep bond with his best friend’s niece, but Siddharth’s world takes a devastating turn when his friend’s niece becomes a victim of sexual abuse and he is falsely accused as the prime suspect. However, the child maintains his innocence.
Siddharth is acquitted, but then another tragedy strikes when his own niece is kidnapped, making him suspect a serial rapist of his involvement. Seeking justice and determined to find his niece, Siddharth embarks on a relentless search.
