Jigarthanda: Double X is a 2023 Indian Tamil-language action drama film[1] written and directed by Karthik Subbaraj and co-produced by him, Kaartekeyen Santhanam, S. Kathiresan and Alankar Pandian under their Stone Bench Films, Five Star Creations and Invenio Origins imprints. The film is a spiritual successor and prequel to Jigarthanda (2014) and stars Raghava Lawrence, S. J. Surya, Nimisha Sajayan, Ilavarasu, Sathyan, Naveen Chandra, Shine Tom Chacko and Aravind Akash. The film is set in the 1970s and tells the story of an aspiring police officer who goes undercover as a filmmaker to kill gangsters.
The film was officially announced in August 2022 with the working title Jigarthanda 2, and the official title was announced in December. Principal photography began in Madurai in the same month, followed by a schedule in Thandikudi, with filming completing in early July 2023. The film’s music is composed by Santosh Narayanan, cinematography by Thiru and editing by Shafiq Mohammed Ali.
Released during Diwali week on 10 November 2023, Jigarthanda Double X received positive reviews from critics, who praised its direction, screenplay, cast, music, cinematography, production values, editing, emotional depth and action sequences. In early April 2022, it was reported that director Karthik Subbaraj would begin work on a sequel to his film Jigarthanda (2014), which received praise from both audiences and critics. It was further reported that Subaskaran Alliraja under his Lyca Productions banner would bankroll the film, with Raghava Lawrence playing one of the lead roles and Bobby Sinha reprising his role from the original film.The project was officially announced on August 1, eight years after the release of Jigarthanda. S. J. Surya is said to be attached as the film’s director. The music composer chosen is Santosh Narayanan, who also composed the music for Jigarthanda and was involved in Subbaraj’s previous films. Nimisha Sajayan was also reportedly attached to the film.
Subbaraj announced on August 31 at Vinayagar Chathurthi that pre-production had begun for Jigarthanda 2. He further stated that the film would have no link to its predecessor and would tell a new story. Cinematography will be handled by Thiru, who had previously worked on Subbaraj’s Petta and Mercury. Shafiq Muhammad Ali was brought on board as the film’s editor. On December 11, the title Jigarthanda 2:1 was announced along with a promotional video.

In 1973, DSP Rathna Kumar is given the task of catching an elephant poacher, Shettani, in Kombai Kaanai forest. The police are tormented with questions regarding Shettani’s whereabouts, even though local tribal people themselves are victims of Shettani.
In Madras, Kirubakaran “Kirvan” is selected as an SI of the Tamil Nadu Police. He visits his fiancée Lourdes’ college to share the news and witness her performance at an event. Later, Lourdes convinces Kirvan to intervene in a brawl between students nearby. Some time later, Kirvan appears to kill four of the students, but he apparently hates blood as he faints at the sight of blood. Shockingly, he is found with the murder weapon in his hand and is subsequently sentenced to prison.

In 1975, the incumbent Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu (CM), Sindhanai Rani, recently announced that he will enter national politics within a few months, necessitating the election of a new Chief Minister. Ratna’s elder brother Jeyakodi is a well-known film star and an aspiring politician in the ruling SMDK party who hopes to become the next Chief Minister. Jeyakodi is dismayed that screenings of his films in Coimbatore, Ramnad, Madurai and Tirunelveli have been cancelled by supporters of his rival and Finance Minister Karumegam. Karumegam, the front-runner for the next Chief Minister, has the backing of four gangs across Tamil Nadu and is pushing young actor Chinna to succeed Jeyako. Jeyakodi asks Rathna to kill the four gangsters who support Karumegam, which will reduce Karumegam’s influence within the party. Rathna names Kirvan and three other ex-police officers and offers them full amnesty and immediate recruitment into the police force in exchange for the clandestine murders.

Jigarthanda DoubleThe film is an artistic masterpiece that exposes the raw truths and makes them accessible to a wider audience. Particularly noteworthy is that it features the first dark-skinned hero, just before Rajnikanth makes his iconic entry into Indian cinema.
The performances by Lawrence and S.J. Suriya are top notch. Karthik Subbaraju’s direction is truly superb.
