Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox is a 2013 American animated superhero film directed by Jay Oliva and written by Jim Krieg. It adapts the 2011 comic book crossover “Flashpoint” by Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert. The film features Justin Chambers as Barry Allen / Flash, C. Thomas Howell as Eobard Thawne / Professor Zoom, Michael B. Jordan as Victor Stone / Cyborg, Kevin McKidd as Thomas Wayne / Batman, and Cary Elwes as Orin / Arthur Curry / Aquaman. Notably, it includes several actors reprising their roles from previous DC animated series, such as Kevin Conroy as Bruce Wayne / Batman, Nathan Fillion as Hal Jordan / Green Lantern, Ron Perlman as Slade Wilson / Deathstroke, Dana Delany as Lois Lane, Vanessa Marshall as Princess Diana / Wonder Woman, and Dee Bradley Baker as Etrigan. This film is the 18th entry in the DC Universe Animated Original Movies and serves as the first installment of the DC Animated Movie Universe.

The post-credits scene in Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox sets the stage for Justice League: War, marking the official launch of the DC Animated Movie Universe. Additionally, a plot point from the film is revisited and further developed in Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay, which is part of the same continuity. This connection is also explored in the final film of the series, Justice League Dark: Apokolips War, when John Constantine delves into Barry Allen’s mind after rescuing him from Darkseid’s control.

Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox Movie Story

While visiting his mother’s grave, Barry Allen, known as the Flash, is alerted to a break-in at the Flash Museum by a group of rogues including Captain Cold, Captain Boomerang, Heat Wave, Mirror Master, and Top. After defeating them, he discovers they were hired by his arch-nemesis, Professor Zoom, as part of a plan to destroy Central City. With the help of the Justice League, Barry thwarts Zoom’s scheme, but as he’s taken to prison, Zoom taunts him about his mother’s death. The next day, Barry wakes up to find the world has drastically changed: his powers are gone, his mother is alive, his wife Iris is married to someone else, and the Justice League no longer exists. Aquaman and his Atlantean forces have submerged Western Europe, while Wonder Woman has led the Amazons to conquer the United Kingdom. The two factions are at war following a rift caused by Wonder Woman killing Aquaman’s wife, Mera, after a confrontation regarding an affair.

Cyborg has assembled a team to address the escalating conflict and seeks Batman’s help, but Batman’s refusal leads the government to recruit Green Lantern to bomb the Atlanteans instead. When Barry visits the Batcave, he is confronted by Batman, who he realizes is not Bruce Wayne but his father, Thomas. Barry attempts to explain the situation and show his Flash costume, only to discover that it has been replaced by Professor Zoom’s costume. Believing Zoom to be the cause of the timeline disruption, Thomas agrees to help Barry recreate the accident that gave him his powers. However, the attempt fails, resulting in severe burns for Barry.

Meanwhile, in London, Steve Trevor tries to rescue reporter Lois Lane but is killed by the Amazons. Lois is captured but later saved by the local resistance. In the ruins of Paris, Deathstroke and Lex Luthor are killed by Aquaman’s forces while investigating Aquaman’s new weapon, which is powered by a captured Captain Atom. Back in the Batcave, realizing his memories are fading, Barry convinces Thomas to try recreating the accident again. This time, the attempt is successful, and Barry regains his powers, though he discovers he cannot time travel because Zoom is also tapping into the Speed Force.

Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox Review

I watched Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox, and it’s a solid animated film with a fantastic cast, including Michael B. Jordan (Black Panther), Nathan Fillion (Guardians of the Galaxy), Kevin McKidd (Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief), C. Thomas Howell (The Outsiders), and Kevin Conroy (Batman: The Killing Joke), among others. The movie is based on the well-known Flashpoint comic book.

My only issues with it are that it might be a bit confusing for viewers who haven’t read the comics, especially at the beginning, and the pacing feels uneven in some parts. Still, it has a compelling story, and I have to say C. Thomas Howell is my new favorite Reverse Flash. The animation is bright and vibrant, particularly at the start, but it can shift to darker tones quickly. There’s a lot of impressive character acting throughout, especially in a memorable scene with Bruce Wayne’s mother in Crime Alley. Overall, it’s a great movie for Flash fans or comic enthusiasts in general, and I’d definitely recommend it!
