The Finest Hours is a 2016 American action thriller directed by Craig Gillespie and produced by Walt Disney Pictures. The screenplay, penned by Eric Johnson, Scott Silver, and Paul Tamasy, is based on The Finest Hours: The True Story of the U.S. Coast Guard’s Most Daring Sea Rescue by Michael J. Tougias and Casey Sherman. Starring Chris Pine, Casey Affleck, Ben Foster, Holliday Grainger, John Ortiz, and Eric Bana, the film recounts the remarkable 1952 rescue of the SS Pendleton’s crew by the United States Coast Guard after the ship was torn apart by a nor’easter off the New England coast.
Released on January 29, 2016, The Finest Hours received mixed reviews from critics and struggled at the box office, earning only $52 million worldwide against a production budget of $70–80 million.Walt Disney Pictures acquired the screen rights to Michael Tougias’ 2009 book, The Finest Hours: The True Story of a Heroic Sea Rescue, in August 2011. Paul Tamasy and Eric Johnson crafted the screenplay based on the book and interviews with survivors. In May 2013, Robert Schwentke was initially set to direct the film, but he left the project to focus on The Divergent Series: Insurgent. Craig Gillespie stepped in as director in April 2014. Casting took place between April and October 2014.

Bernard “Bernie” Webber, a crewman at Coast Guard Station Chatham in Massachusetts, is in love with a local woman named Miriam Penttinen. They plan to marry on April 16, but before he can propose, Bernie needs to obtain permission from the station’s commanding officer, Chief Warrant Officer Daniel Cluff—a process that is usually a mere formality. On February 18, 1952, the day he intends to ask for permission, the oil tanker SS Pendleton splits in half off the Chatham coast during a fierce nor’easter. With most of the station’s crew already engaged in rescuing the similarly damaged SS Fort Mercer, Bernie is ordered to pilot the motor lifeboat CG 36500 to rescue the Pendleton’s crew. He is joined by volunteers Andrew Fitzgerald, Ervin Maske, and Richard P. Livesey.
Meanwhile, Ray Sybert, the Pendleton’s engineer and the highest-ranking surviving officer, organizes the remaining crew to maneuver the sinking stern of the tanker onto a submerged reef, where it can remain stable until help arrives. Miriam, learning that Bernie is leading the rescue mission, fears for his life and views it as a suicide mission. Distrustful of Cluff, who is seen by many in Chatham as incompetent due to his outsider status, Miriam drives to the station to demand that he recall Bernie. Cluff, however, refuses her request and brusquely orders her to leave.
The Finest Hours Movie Review
The film takes a bit to get going, but the introduction of the large ensemble cast helped draw me in. The casting was spot-on, featuring talented character actors whose faces I recognized and appreciated, even if I couldn’t recall all their names. This approach really enhanced my emotional investment and made me genuinely concerned about who might not make it through the rescue mission. With the stakes so high, I braced myself for some heart-wrenching moments. The cinematography was impressive, and the storm scenes were particularly gripping. Overall, it’s a compelling film that brings to life a remarkable true story of two captains who, against all odds, kept their composure and made the best decisions to ensure their men’s survival.
