Euphoria is an American teen drama series produced and primarily scripted by Sam Levinson for HBO. It is based on the Israeli miniseries of the same name by Ron Leshem and Daphna Levin. The series stars Zendaya, Maude Apatow, Angus Cloud, Eric Dane, Alexa Demie, Jacob Elordi, Barbie Ferreira, Nika King, Storm Reid, Hunter Schafer, Algee Smith, and Sydney Sweeney. The series follows drug-addicted teenager Rue Bennett (Zendaya) as she gets clean after rehab and struggles to find her place in the world and adjust to relationships. While Rue is the focus of the series, backstories for the rest of the major characters are provided at the beginning of most episodes.
Euphoria’s executive producers include Levinson, Canadian rapper and singer Drake, Zendaya, Ron Leshem, and Gary Lennon. The series is being filmed at Ulysses S. Grant High School in Los Angeles, California, Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, California, and Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California. Outside of California, filming has also taken place at Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden, Hertfordshire, as well as in Dublin, London, New York City, Rome and Singapore. The series received generally positive reviews, with praise for its cinematography, score, cast acting, and approach to adult themes. It also drew controversy due to its high school setting and teenage characters, with critics finding the nudity and sexual content excessive. It is the fourth most-watched series in HBO history, behind Game of Thrones, The Last of Us, and House of the Dragon. The series is set in the same universe as Levinson’s 2023 television series Idol.
The first season of Euphoria premiered on June 16, 2019. Two one-hour specials aired in December 2020 and January 2021. The second season premiered on January 9, 2022. In February 2022, the series was renewed for a third season. Filming was paused due to Hollywood labor disputes in 2023 and the unexpected deaths of Cloud and executive producer Kevin Turen. Production on Euphoria season 3 was originally scheduled to begin in December 2023, but was ultimately postponed indefinitely. On June 13, 2024, it was confirmed that production would resume for the series’ third season, which will likely move away from the high school setting of the first two seasons. The series has received numerous awards, including a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Drama Series. Zendaya won two Primetime Emmy Awards and one Broadcast Critics Association Award for her performance, and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Drama Series for her role as Lou. Sweeney, Colman Domingo, and Martha Kelly were also nominated for Emmys for their performances, with Domingo winning Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for her role as Ali.

Euphoria Story
As a child, Ruby Bennett struggled with mental health issues and the death of her father from cancer, which led to drug addiction. When “Lou”, now 16, returns home from rehab, she immediately goes to buy drugs from her dealer, Fezco (“Fez”). Jules, a transgender woman new in town, receives an invitation from her classmate, Cat, to a party hosted by popular college freshman Christopher McKay. Before the party, Jules meets an older man from a dating app at a motel after lying about her age. Cat loses her virginity at the party. Mackey’s high school girlfriend, Cathy, is upset that Mackey choked her during sex, but Mackey stops her and they discuss it. Maddie, who recently broke up with star quarterback Nate, has a public revenge sex with Tyler, whom she just met at a party. This enrages Nate, who gets drunk and harasses Jules, and she threatens him with a knife and cuts his arm. Lou introduces himself to Jules and they go home together. Nate goes home and meets Jules’ father, Cal, with whom Jules had an affair.
Euphoria Review
Euphoria, Zendaya and HBO deserve universal praise for this show. It’s so profoundly designed and written, and features such a vital performance from Zendaya who brings her role as Rue to life she soaks it up, and even though she’s one of the most recognizable faces in the world, you can’t help but root for Rue to watch.
First off, I want to talk about the cinematography. Marcel Leb came on board and decided to make this a showcase for his amazing cinematography. From the colors to the shots (especially Rue’s transition from drug use to partying and Jules rising from the water), the show and Marcel Leb’s work is a master class in cinematography. It goes beyond just editing shots and becomes a true work of art.

Next, of course, is the acting. From Zendaya to Storm Reid, Hunter Schafer to Maude Apatow, everyone is doing their best in an era of shows where acting is no longer the focus and looks take precedence over talent. It’s a refreshing change to see a show where characters with limited screen time still ultimately give great performances. Maude Apatow is an example of this. The chemistry between the cast is fascinating. Newcomer Hunter Schafer is a pleasant surprise as he doesn’t seem to be able to keep up with any of the more experienced actors in the cast. His chemistry with Zendaya is outstanding of course, but he has a scene with Jacob Elordi’s character and they both show their talent in the nuance of playing that scene.
