Hasseen Dilruba is a 2021 Indian Hindi-language romantic thriller film directed by Vinil Mathew and written by Kanika Dhillon. The film stars Taapsee Pannu, Vikrant Massey, and Harshvardhan Rane.

The film premiered on Netflix on July 2, 2021.It received mixed reviews. Hasseen Dilruba emerged as the most-watched Hindi film on Netflix this year, ranking in the top 10 in 22 countries.. A sequel, titled Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba, premiered on Netflix on August 9, 2024.

Screenwriter Kanika Dhillon approached director Vinil Mathew to make the film based on a script she had written. Vinil, whose last film was the romantic comedy Hasee Toh Phasee which released in 2014, was keen to do a film based on a different genre. He agreed to direct because the script deals with the dark nature of human relationships. Actress Taapsee Pannu agreed to adapt it because she liked the script’s combination of thriller and romance genres.

Principal photography began on 18 January 2020 in Haridwar. In March 2020, filming was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Filming was completed in Mumbai on 29 October 2020.

The film received mixed reviews. On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an average rating of 5/10, with 58% positive from 12 reviews.

Ronak Koteka of The Times of India gave the film three and a half stars out of five, calling it “a wonderfully dark, rebellious love story with thrilling twists” and praising Pannu’s “utterly flawless delivery. Stuart Ghosh of The Quint gave the film three and a half stars out of five, adding that “Haseen Dilruba only really works if we surrender unconditionally to its pulpy world”. A Statesman review said, “It’s clever how it invests 135 minutes of storytelling in a mix of suspense and dry humour”. Manisha Raque of Moneycontrol compared the film to the Billie Eilish song All the Good Girls Go to Hell and found that it was “entertaining and different to the usual ‘Indian originals’ found on OTT platforms like Netflix. Devesh Sharma of Filmfare was pleased with Mathew and Dhillon’s use of film noir tropes and concluded, “Watch this film for its dark look at love and brilliant performances from the entire ensemble.”

Rani, a housewife, was feeding her dog outside her house when suddenly the house exploded, presumably killing her husband, Rishabh “Rish” Saxena. Police find a body charred beyond recognition with a severed hand, which Rani identifies as Rishth. The film alternates between the past (told in flashbacks) and the present; the reality of the explosion is intertwined with the police investigation taking place in the present.

Flashbacks reveal an arranged marriage between the two, with Rish falling in love with Rani immediately, but she only married him because her boyfriend left her. After the wedding, tension and discomfort remain between her and Rishu and his family. To add to the tense atmosphere, a nervous Riju doesn’t show up for sex. The next day, he hears her telling her mother and aunt about her inability to have sex. Hurt, he doesn’t even acknowledge her, and their relationship falls apart. When Rani’s well-built and attractive cousin Neil Tripathi comes to visit, Rani finds herself attracted to him. They then begin a passionate relationship. Rani falls in love and learns to cook mutton despite being a vegetarian. After some time, she tells Neil that she wants to marry him. Fearing the commitment, Neil panics and runs away. Hurt, Rani blurts out the truth in front of Rishu. He grows disgusted with her but still protects her from people who criticize her actions.

As for the lead actors Vikrant Mehsi and Tapsee Pannu, it is a true masterpiece of acting.
The changes of emotions, the quick transitions of the film without losing focus of the story is what keeps you hooked till the end.
Though two thirds of the film kept me guessing, I can’t say that I couldn’t predict the climax, especially since I had seen a story (a TV show on short stories) with a similar climax many years ago. Mandira Bedi played the lead role.
Vikrant is a gem of an actor. He portrays every aspect of Rishu so well that I can’t hate or love him, and I think that is the beauty of Rishu’s character. I could sympathize with him even when his death stare sent chills down my spine.

Tapsee looks beautiful and plays Rani beautifully, who I found to be a match for her role in the film Manmarjiya. The roles are very similar and yet very different.

The supporting actors did justice to their roles.
