Jane Got a Gun is a 2015 American Western directed by Gavin O’Connor, with a screenplay by Brian Duffield, Joel Edgerton, and Anthony Tambakis. Starring Natalie Portman, Edgerton, Noah Emmerich, Rodrigo Santoro, Boyd Holbrook, and Ewan McGregor, the film faced extensive production challenges since 2012, including changes in directors and casting. Principal photography commenced on March 21, 2013, and the film was eventually released on January 29, 2016. It was also showcased at the 7th Almería Western Film Festival on October 12, 2017.
In May 2012, it was announced that Natalie Portman would star as Jane Hammond in Jane Got a Gun, with Lynne Ramsay set to direct. By August 2012, Michael Fassbender was in talks for the role of Dan Frost, Jane’s ex-lover. In December 2012, Joel Edgerton was cast as the film’s villain, John Bishop. On February 4, 2013, Rodrigo Santoro joined the cast as Fitchum. However, on March 11, 2013, it was revealed that Fassbender had exited the project due to scheduling conflicts with X-Men: Days of Future Past. Ramsay then recast Edgerton as Dan Frost and brought in Jude Law as John Bishop. Shortly after, on March 19, 2013, Ramsay departed from the production, and Gavin O’Connor was announced as her replacement the following day. Law also left the film, having committed to work with Ramsay.

Ham’s injuries leave him helpless, prompting Jane to take her daughter to safety with a trusted friend. She then rides to the home of her neighbor and former fiancé, Dan Frost, asking for his help in protecting her family from the Bishop Boys. Initially, Dan, living in squalor and filled with bitterness, refuses her plea. Determined, Jane heads into town to buy guns and ammunition. While leaving the shop, she is confronted by a member of the Bishop gang, who threatens her at gunpoint. Jane insists she hasn’t seen Ham in years, but the thug recognizes the gun she carries as Ham’s and demands she take him back home. Just then, Dan appears and tells the thug to back off. In a swift turn, Jane draws her gun and kills the outlaw.
After leaving the body in the alley, Jane and Dan ride back to her house, where Ham is still alive but very weak. Changed by the confrontation, Dan decides to help Jane, and they begin preparing for the impending attack from the Bishop gang. Bishop sets out with his gang to track down Ham. One of his men stumbles upon Jane’s house and recognizes her, but Dan quickly kills him and buries the body to avoid raising an alarm. He then digs a shallow trench in Jane’s front yard, filling it with jars of kerosene, nails, and shards of glass, readying for the fight ahead.
