Kshanam (transl. “Moment”) is a 2016 Indian Telugu-language mystery thriller directed by Ravikanth Perepu. The film stars Adivi Sesh, who also co-wrote the screenplay, alongside Adah Sharma. Supporting roles feature Anasuya Bharadwaj, Vennela Kishore, Satyam Rajesh, Satyadev, and Ravi Varma. The music is composed by Sricharan Pakala, with cinematography by Shaneil Deo. The plot follows Rishi, who returns to India to search for the missing child of his ex-girlfriend, Shwetha. Released on February 26, 2016, Kshanam received positive reviews from both critics and audiences. It was later remade in several languages: as Sathya in Tamil (2017), as the action film Baaghi 2 in Hindi (2018), as Aadyaa in Kannada (2020), and as Kidnap in Sinhala.
The production of Kshanam began when Prasad V Potluri of PVP Cinema agreed to finance the film, and Sesh’s friend, Ravikanth Perepu, was chosen to make his directorial debut in Telugu cinema. Sesh and Perepu collaborated on the screenplay for ten months, with pre-production starting three months after scripting began. They opted for a low budget to ensure the project was feasible given the genre’s appeal. The crew comprised 20 members, including two of Perepu’s high school friends who served as associate directors. During the scriptwriting process, Sesh and Perepu explored various scenarios, discarding the first one as too predictable. Shaneil Deo took on the role of director of photography, while Sricharan Pakala composed the film’s soundtrack and score. Perepu edited the film alongside Arjun Shastri, with Sesh and the associate directors also contributing to the editing process. Sesh portrayed Rishi, an investment banker on a quest to find his ex-girlfriend’s missing child at her request. He noted that Rishi was modeled after his own sensibilities, with the exception of the character being an alcoholic.

Kshanam Movie Story
Rishi, an investment banker based in San Francisco, receives a voice call from his ex-girlfriend Sweta after a long period of silence. They had studied medicine together and once planned to marry, but her father arranged a match with an entrepreneur named Karthik. Still in love with Sweta, Rishi travels to India under the guise of attending a relative’s wedding. He hires a car from a travel agent named Babu Khan, obtains a SIM card registered to his sister’s address, and checks into the Marriott Hotel.
When Rishi meets Sweta at a restaurant, he discovers that her five-year-old daughter, Riya, is missing. Sweta expresses her despair, noting that no one, including Karthik, believes Riya actually exists. Rishi also learns about Karthik’s brother Bobby, a drug addict who frequently visits their home. Determined to help, Rishi embarks on an informal investigation, but his efforts are met with repeated failures, leading to conflicts with two African-American gangsters in the area. Fortunately, Babu, who is involved in drug transportation, intervenes to save Rishi out of goodwill. Posing as a police officer named Vasanth Khanna, Rishi confronts Karthik and discovers that the couple has been childless. Karthik reveals that Sweta had been attacked by two masked men before her car was stolen, resulting in her falling into a coma. After recovering, Sweta began claiming that she had a daughter named Riya.
Kshanam Movie Review
When the movie was first released, I thought it was just okay. However, after watching it again recently, I found it to be a bit cringeworthy, reminiscent of Hollywood’s less stellar moments. It came out during a transitional period for the Telugu film industry, shifting from typical commercial films to more sensible, pan-Indian stories, which is likely why it gained popularity at the time.
That said, I’d still recommend it as a decent one-time watch. Many of my friends share this sentiment. While the plot twist isn’t particularly convincing, the performances from the lead and supporting actors are quite strong. Major production house PVP Cinemas took a chance on this low-budget film and supported the crew well, which deserves recognition. Adivi Sesh’s efforts in particular should be praised—he really shines in this project.
