Meesaya Murukku (translated as Twirl Your Moustache) is a 2017 Indian Tamil-language coming-of-age musical comedy-drama film, marking the directorial debut of Hiphop Tamizha, who also stars in the lead role. Alongside him, newcomer Aathmika plays the female lead, with supporting performances by Vivek, RJ Vigneshkanth, and Vijayalakshmi. The film is a partly fictionalized biopic of Adhi’s early life and was released on July 21, 2017. It received mostly positive reviews and became a box-office success. The film was later remade in Kannada in 2019 as Padde Huli. In August 2013, Aadhi, the lead singer of Hiphop Tamizha (HHT), announced that he had been signed on as the lead for a full-length feature film based on HHT, which was expected to be released by mid-2014. By October 2016, a 90-second teaser was released on HHT’s official YouTube channel, revealing the film’s title as Meesaya Murukku. Produced by N. Ramasamy and Hema Rukmani for Thenandal Studio Limited, the project was greenlit within five minutes of Aadhi’s narration, as they were impressed by his video song on Jallikattu, “Takkaru Takkaru.”

In addition to making his acting debut in a full-length role, Aadhi also served as the writer, director, and composer for the film, writing the lyrics as well. At a press conference before the film’s release, Sundar C confirmed that it was partly biographical, reflecting aspects of Aadhi’s life. The title Meesaya Murukku is inspired by a saying from Aadhi’s father: “Thothalum jeythalum, meesaya murukku,” meaning “win or lose, always twirl your moustache.”

Meesaya Murukku follows the journey of Adhi, a young man passionate about music, and his close friend Jeeva. Supported by his father, Professor Ramachandran, Adhi pursues electrical engineering while secretly dating Nila, his childhood friend from a wealthy family. Their relationship is met with opposition from Nila’s parents, leading to threats against Adhi’s family.

After graduation, Adhi expresses his desire to move to Chennai to become a musician, promising both his father and Nila’s father that he will find a job and marry her within a year. However, when they arrive in Chennai, Adhi and Jeeva struggle to find opportunities in the music industry. After a year of setbacks, they prepare to return home, but a viral performance on a radio show gives Adhi renewed hope.As he pursues his dreams, Nila’s family pressures her into marriage, which devastates Adhi. Despite this personal heartbreak, Adhi’s music career flourishes, and within five years, he and Jeeva become successful music directors in the film industry, realizing their dreams while grappling with their past.
