The Black Phone is a 2021 American supernatural horror film directed by Scott Derrickson and co-written by his longtime collaborator C. Robert Cargill. Mason Thames plays Finny, a teenager who is kidnapped by a serial killer colloquially known as The Glover (Ethan Hawke). In captivity, Finny discovers a mysterious black rotary phone, which he uses to communicate with the spirits of The Glover’s murdered victims to plan his escape. Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies, and James Ransone are also part of the main cast. Derrickson and Cargill produced The Black Phone in collaboration with Blumhouse Productions CEO Jason Blum. Universal Pictures oversaw the film’s commercial distribution, and financing came from a Universal-Blumhouse co-production agreement and a tax subsidy from the state of North Carolina.
The idea for The Black Phone came from Derrickson and Cargill’s adaptation of Joe Hill’s short story of the same name. Derrickson struggled to come up with additional ideas to complement the short story and turned his attention to other film projects. The film lay dormant until he stepped down from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022) over creative differences. Derrickson based The Black Phone’s story on his childhood experiences in the suburbs of Denver, Colorado. Principal photography began in February 2021 on a budget of $16-18 million and concluded the following month. Filming took place on sets and locations in Wilmington, North Carolina. Mark Koven composed the film’s score, which is based on modern and classic synthesizer sounds.
The Black Phone premiered at Fantastic Fest on September 25, 2021, and was released in US theaters on June 24, 2022, after several postponements. The film was an unexpected box office success, grossing $161.4 million worldwide. Critics praised the acting but disagreed about the concept. The success of The Black Phone led to the canonical short film Dreamkill, also directed by Derrickson and written by Derrickson and Cargill. The film was released in 2023 as part of the anthology film V/H/S/85. A sequel is scheduled for release on October 17, 2025.
The Black Phone was born from filmmakers Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill’s adaptation of Joe Hill’s short story of the same name, which was published in the horror anthology 20th Century Ghosts (2005). Derrickson came across 20th Century Ghosts shortly after its initial release in the United States. The director was keen to conceive a film faithful to The Black Phone, fascinated by its presentation of a conventional serial killer story, but struggled to develop his own ideas. He put the project on hold to focus on his professional relationship with Cargill, whom he had maintained since Sinister (2012), and his contractual obligations with Marvel Studios as director of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022). Meanwhile, Cargill briefly recruited a replacement director, but called it off when Derrickson convinced him to wait until he was in the role. Their collaboration resumed after Derrickson left Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness due to a dispute over the film’s art direction.

The Black Phone Movie Review
This movie is pretty good. One of the scariest horror movies (among the few I’ve seen). The story is about a child who is kidnapped by a mysterious man, who uses the titular black phone to talk to his previous victims in order to escape. The room the protagonist is locked in has a really claustrophobic feel to it, as if it’s not a fun place to be locked up in. This movie had a really mysterious atmosphere, especially in the middle part. It was a lot more interesting than I expected and didn’t waste my time with long, boring, pointless scenes . It moved at a good pace and although the cast was pretty small, the two characters that it revolved around were very well done with good acting and good writing. It was pretty cool to see the main character talk to his former victims and build up courage, learning more secrets about the villain’s house in the process, and becoming strong enough to face off against the villain.
The antagonist is a pretty old-fashioned “masked killer” type, but unique enough (at least compared to what I’ve seen) to be different from Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers, Leatherface, Ghostface, and many other horror villains. To stand out, and be a villain in his own right. He’s really scary, that’s exactly what a horror villain should be.
